Mark - thanks, that is my latest Rick - the no serial number late '75 Rick Joey helped me acquire from a dealer there in CA. It is my 4th and my favorite, just a tad ahead of my 2004 4003. Then there is the '91 4003S and '95 4004C.

Thanks also, Tom. It had a Badass II bridge on it when it came. I got a '79 tailpiece from Jon in Oslo and put that on to return it to how it should be. It had more lift when I got it but after clamping, I got it to where it is and I'm happy. I have D'Addario XL170 rounds on it and it has THE TONE. An inspiring pleasure to play.

John - I wondered about trying the clamping method for straightening out the tailpice lift - how did you go about the process? It hasn't lifted again after clamping?

My December 1972 4001 turns 35 this month. She is now old enough to be President of the United States...and if elected, she might do better than some of her predecessors...

When I bought her, she looked like photo #1. I bought the bass from a drug-consuming gentleman in 1988 for $150. It used to belong to Tommy Stinson of The Replacements and can be seen in action on their Saturday Night Live appearance in 1986, often found on YouTube. It wasn't until last year that I discovered the RIC forum, leading me to this forum, and lots of good advice that allowed me to get the bass looking like photo #2 all by my clumsy self.

Mark, I followed Gary Clauson's advice on straightening a tailpiece. Only I did not do the heating. I did not get this one flat, but the remaining lift is less than a credit card in height. I could have continued, but was happy with it the way it was. Read about his adventure that starts from Gary's post on Nov. 3, 2005 in this thread for the lowdown:
