Anyone tried slide on a ric?

Post by rickenvon »

Ive been listing to a lot of slide stuff and was wondering what Slide sounds like on a ric. I think I might try it someday.

Glenn Frey had a custom 200 series RIC that Joe Walsh uses a lot for slide. You can see him play it on the first Crossroads DVD.

It's been awhile, but I have. I did some Jeff Beck Yardbirds on mine, but it was a LONG time ago. I thought it sounded just fine at the time.

On the Hell Freezes Over video, Walsh uses a 230GF (Frey sig model) for slide on Pretty Maids All In A Row and it sounds really cool. Of course there are always the lap steels too! :)

On one of my tunes I recorded an "atmospheric" track playing my 4001CS with a slide.

I believe John Kay uses a slide as well on his 381.

Sorry, I don't understand these "can one do [fill in the blank] on a Rickenbacker?" questions.
Whether it is slide, blues, rock, string bending, wash dishes, whatever.
A Rickenbacker guitar is just like any other guitar (only better).
Whatever one can do on any guitar, one can do on a RIC (only better).
I just find that to be very odd.
Can you imagime someone asking on a Fender forum - "Can one play rock music on a Fender?"
Preposterous, right? No difference here.

I've played slide on my 480 for years,
but I just love my 650D for slide these days.

+1 Mark. If you can do it with an "x" brand, you can do it better on a Ric. No limits.

I tried a bit of slide on my 650 Atlantis on 'Double Argent':

http://www.myspace.com/noelchristianriddell

It has a great lead voice! Listen closely and you'll hear E-bow bass also (sounds a bit like a vacuum cleaner  ).

Good point Mark! It's like asking if a Stratocaster can be used for anything other than surf music.

I recall seeing a video clip a while back in which George Harrison used a slide on what I think was a 450... It was cool! I wish I could remember what song it was.

'This Is Love' from his wonderful Cloud 9 album.

I played this at a little club in Frankfort over the summer and completely forgot the third verse. A little embarrassing perhaps, but the crowd was sympathetic.

One thing you may be forgetting is that Ricks have quite a curve to the necks and strings. Slide is a lot easier on flatter string setups, this may be what the OP was referring too.

It's possible of course, a seasoned pro like myself (yeah.... right....   ) could do it no problem.

Henri, I think you asked a very good question. Different manufacturers' guitars play very differently, in a lot of ways. In any event, it's fun to discuss anyways.

I like low action on all my axes, so that prevents using the slide (unless I want to ding up the frets and neck).
