I've been reading the forum since I took delivery of my 4003 in early November. Sadly, I'm about to return the 4003 I bought from an Internet retailer because I cannot get rid of 2 dead spots on the neck: the C on the G-string at the 5th fret and B/C on the D-string at the 9th/10th frets. I have tried 3 different gauges of strings (original Ric strings and D'Addario 165's and 220's) and every conceivable wiggle and wobble of the truss rods. I've been able to reduce them, but never totally eliminate them. I have other basses that have the same issue, and other basses that ring true up and down the neck. I think these spots are so noticeable on the Ric because it sustains so well everywhere else. It's killing me to return it, but I can't justify the $$$ spent on a bass that have to play "around" certain notes on the neck. Any last advice or tips before she goes back?
I've even tried the FatFinger that I use on my fretless J**z, no luck.
This is the type of dead spot you can literally feel in your hands. The neck transmits vibrations back into your hands. On the non-dead notes, it's a sweet uniform feeling. On the dead-spots, you can feel the disruptive oscillations in the wood.

Re: Save my 4003
Welcome Bob. I hope that the bass wizards will have something to offer you with regard to these dead spots.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

i had a few spots on my Rics and they practically went away when I added a compressor to my set up.
