They are tapered, but oversized, when placed on the machine. The final taper is cut towards the conclusion of the program.

This is so much more interesting than which flats to use or whether Ampeg is better than...blah blah blah.

Here's a post from Dale Fortune, back in '06 when we had a discussion about inlay material.....
This is one of my favorite subjects since I worked there in the 73 transition period. The wide inlays that were resin/pearl toner base, were made in sheets starting with a thin layer of white resin. Over this was poured a layer of clear resin that was mixed with a pearl toner. These supplies came from Standard Brands Paint just down the street from Electro. After these had cured, they were cut on a table saw to the various widths and fitted into the finger boards that had the inlay pockets already cut full width on the pin router. This was a very time consuming procedure which led to the smaller tri-angel inlays and the pouring of these. They were done in this manner. The F.B. was routed for the tri-angel inlays, then glued to the neck stock, then to the inlay dept. where they were 1st painted grey as a base coat, then the pearl resin mixture was poured into the cavities with just a little overflowing. Let this cure, run neck stock thru the big belt sander, then to the crowning sander, then frets were installed, binding put on, neck shaped and sanded. Whew, seems like only yesterday. Now the body wings were glued on. I have posted some pictures of the inlay material that I still have from that era. There are several different types: the solid white vinyl of .060 that was cut and glued in the full width, circa early 60's, the real C.P. inlays which were also cut from 12X12inch sheets then glued in, circa 1964, then the last inlays of the transition period, late 60's thru mid 1973, these were a multi layer of white base coat and pearl toned resin poured over this, cut on a table saw and fitted to the finger boards.

Thank God for CNC technology because now all the aformentioned steps can be performed on one machine and things like precision cut inlays are now only a program away!
Re: RIC selling one-of-a-kind experimental finish 4003 on eBay!
Hey Ben, are you guys currently making anything cut off of a band saw now, or has it all gone to CNC ??...say, for example, left-handed instruments....

Now I wish all this info was under a different heading for future reference!

If the materials came from Standard Brands, then the inlays must be polyester. I don't recall them selling any epoxies.

Back on topic: just under 2-1/2 hours to go, and still at $4003 ... any predictions on how crazy will it get in the last hour, or last few minutes?

$5701 to one of our own, yes?

I really liked this one. The checkerbinding really adds to the bass. Since they went back to the walnut wings,,,I'd really like to see RIC at least offer checkerbinding as an option in 2009.

There's the quote from the factory itself, and yet, still, we have those here who believe they know more and they know better (and you really would have thought they should know better by now, considering the replied factory postings to said individualRIC_FACTORY wrote: I guarantee you'll never see another color like this from us.
That blatantly contradicts the stated factory position on the first page of this thread, and, could well be interpreted as inflammatory, to say the least.
Is it any surprise that those at RIC have decided to limit posting here, especially when a certain individual appears consistently to try and undermine their position.
It would appear some people just don't get it...

For those who posted very recently in this thread you will notice extensive edits. The first edits were associated with opinions that I consider inflammatory. The additional edits were comments of many who were rightfully offended by the poster's comments. Once the offending post is removed, these comments were out of context and hence their removal.
May I please ask that we carefully think about what we are saying here. As I have repeated on so very many occasions, being a poster on this Forum comes with a personal responsibility to be sensitive to the feelings of others. This is not the "I can say whatever I want forum." As we all know, there are lots of those forums on the Internet. Comments that were made in this thread can not be tolerated.
I am here because of my love of Rickenbacker guitars and my respect for the product that RIC produces. I am here to discuss the positive impact of these instruments on life. I am here because I enjoy conversation and people.
Should you have a distaste for Rickenbackers or a personal grievance, please post it on an appropriate forum. Such posts are not appropriate here. I am saddened by those who persist in being critical for its ownsake and who could care less about what happens to this Forum or the feelings of others.
