The other face of nineties "Girlpower"

Post by blazer »

I guess we all remember the "girl power" era of the later half of the 1990's for the wrong acts, such as All saints and the Spice girls because they were constantly in the picture BUT we tend to forget that there were more women who made their mark in those days proving that "Girl power" also applied to the other side of the female spectrum: the brainy girls, the girls who didn't dress feminine, the tomboys who raised hell on a regular basis who just couldn't find themselves in the bubblegum pop that was "girl power"according to the spice girls. Let's all give props to the girls who stood up and showed the rowdier face of "Girl Power"

Such as Kim and her twin sister Kelley Deal who's band "The Breeders" had one of the most fun records of that time.

"Cannonball"

From the more artsy side of music emerged Björk who's music traded guitars in for keyboards and drum computers but they were not used to create the kind of techno we all associate with that kinds of instruments. Of course her haunting voice also contributed to the picture.

"Human behavior"

That having a black skin did not mean that you'd have to perform R&B was proven by Deborah Ann Dyer, AKA Skin from Skunk Anansi who proved more than often that she could rock with the best of them.

"Charity"[/url]

We can't have a topic like this without the true queen of the other face of Girl power, Kim Gordon of sonic youth who combinded class with the wasted grunge look.
