Re: Aussie beers - please rate these
Traditionally each Australian state has it's unique breweries. Parochialism, until very recently, meant that most brews didn't cross borders. So..
Tooheys: is a/the standard brew available on tap in NSW(Sydney). Light coloured full strength(5%) lager. A "standard" Aussie beer. I don't mind it at all.
James Boag: A "new" good beer but just a boutique name to get the punters believing they're drinking something special. Made by one of the bigger brewers as a marketing exercise.
Coopers: The South Australian(Adelaide) brewery. The "standard" ale in that state. Darker colour than most Aussie brews. Made from water(or is that mud) from the Murray river. Considered absolute rubbish by most discerning beer drinkers. Has never made any inroads into other brewers territories unlike Fosters(Melb Vic, Toohey's , Cascade(Tasmania) etc.
Are these you're choices in the store?

Jdog: These are all mainstream Australian breweries and each produces good beers - depending on your tastes.
We need to be a little more specific here because some are good to excellent but others are considered to be ****.
Tooheys: Red label bitter is not a bad beer and is better value than most outside New South Wales because it is sold in boxes of 30 for less than a 'slab' of 24. The Blue label 'light' is a low alcohol beer that I wouldn't touch with a barge pole! Then there's Tooheys Black, which is a darker, more bitter beer and is not bad for a change from 'normal' beers. It is not beer in the 'Guinness' style, however.... Guinness is 'stout' anyway - not beer.
James Boag: Their Premium Lager is an excellent beer with a distinctive 'Tasmanian' flavour. I consider their draught beer (which is available packaged) to be in the '****' category.
Coopers: Their two mainstream beers differ markedly. Coopers 'Red' is a sparkling ale with a unique flavour due to the water used. It has sediment in it and should be turned upside down for a few seconds prior to opening to allow the sediment to mix with the beer. I like it and drink it often for a change. Their Coopers 'Green' is a pale ale and doesn't have the sediment. Another nice beer for a change.
None of the above mentioned beers have a really strong 'malty' or 'hoppy' flavour (like English beers or US 'boutique' ones) but are stronger (both in alcohol content and flavour) than mainstream US beers like Bud or Millers MGD.
If I had to choose one fom each brewery they would be:
Tooheys: Red Bitter
Boags: James Boag Premium Lager
Coopers: Red Sparkling Ale

I wonder if I can find Coopers in SoCal?
JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS!
Re: Aussie beers - please rate these
Don't know, Joey. I know you can get it in Springfield Illinois!
Not exactly SoCal but this might be worth a try:

Wet and cold grog...Will anything do....Apparently not...
One of my friends, on his first visit to Sydney, goes in and asks for a Fosters...
"We don't serve that **** water here Pom, that's just the s**t we've exported to you over there...Now if you want to stay, you'd better order a real beer"...

In my opinion, you can't go wrong with Tooheys.jdogric12aolcom wrote:Hey there friends in Oz. Do me a favor please, and give me your opinions on these beers... Thanks, J

But at the moment a real nice beer that I've come to like a lot is Cascade - see if you can find that one, it's a beaut.

I'm a red-wine drinker myself (nothing beats the aussie cab sav - I sure do miss it when I'm away) but during summer I'm right into the Cascade to quench the thirst.
