Okay, that was also a learning experience, but I'm not sure it is what I saw. What I meant was the finish of the instrument (probably polyester from your earlier post - :) ) is "ribbed" with the grain of the wood under it. Is that due to one, thin coat of color and then one thin coat of clear finish? Will something like that crack out in a short time? It was on instruments in the price range you mentioned.

Hard to say without actually seeing the finish in question. Venturing any guess is tough from a verbal description.

Paul, have you ever refinished a strat in CV or would you even consider assembling and finishing a frankenstrat? (sorry, I had to ask)

Yeah, of course. I'm not prejudiced. But right now I am backlogged. That word and "Rickenbacker" seem to go together, sadly...
