Pot values

Post by toneman »

Are the pot values the same on new production Ric's as they were in the sixties? Was wondering if the vintage 360/12's & 625/12's and current "vintage type" Ric's both used 250K audio taper pots for volume controls.
Thanks!

I'm not sure, but the pots I ordered for my 4001 seem to have a linear taper, which is really annoying. The volume and tone hardly change until the end of the rotation. I'm thinking of trying some of Ted Weber's 30% audio taper pots as they would be more usable I would think, and he has a great reputation.

I put some CTS 500K audio tapers in both volumes and the mix control. The one's that were in there read only around 180K. Suppose to be 250K? CTS seems to have fallen down on the quality control. I've gotten alot of 500K pots that I order in bulk of 25 at a time from Allparts and over half read between 450K-480K.
The higher value seems to let the pickups sound a bit clearer and the top end is more open. I also had some of the old blue .047 "Molded" caps and replaced the tone caps with those and used an old Sprauge .005 "bumblebee" cap in place of the jumper on the bridge pickup. The guitar now sounds like an old one.
