DECEMBER MORNING

Post by jingle_jangle »

Got up early today, per my usual plan. Upon entering my tiny living/music room, I was greeted by the sight of two Rick short scales, alongside a VOX amp and my VOX Continental. I did a bit of repositioning, then took a series of photos. Here's one:

Unfortunately, my usual cameras are at the office, and this one, normally set at high res, had been reset to low res, small pics. But I'm going to do it right later tonight...

After nearly three years of Ebay bidding in vain, I found a C58 in excellent condition at a reasonable price, thanks to a Forumite. Ditto for the AFG 1996. Thanks, Dan and John!

A couple of months ago, I finally acquired my dream combo organ, a Hayvenhurst (USA-made) VOX Continental, one of only about 300 made before production was switched to Italy. The USA Continentals are the best-built of the bunch, with wooden (not plastic) keys, which have a great feel, and Thomas Organ-designed and -built circuitry, which is fairly bulletproof. This one was built in April '66, and came from the original owner in KC, who was unable to play it anymore because of arthritis. I found it late one night on craigslist KC, where it had only been listed for 39 minutes.

Just arrived yesterday (another DHL horror story--see the accompanying thread) is the replica early VOX Royal Guardsman, as pictured in their '64 catalog, which our good friend and Rick dealer Gary Hahlbeck of North Coast Music, was kind enough to build for me.

This amp is a visual replica of the original, with one of Gary's unique 100W AD100VTH head conversions into an early VOX "thinline" head cabinet, AC30-style 2X12" lower cabinet, and limited-production single tube trolley. It sounds great, having a very clean tone suitable for organ with lots of nice bottom end, too. I've also acquired a new AC50CC 50W tube head unit to switch off to for guitar.

Nice photo, indeed! I miss my (Italian) Vox Continental every day, though I do play keyboards much the way a hoofed animal might (if they lacked musical training and had poor hearing and taste.) It's even harder to play guitar that way, but somehow I do a little better.
