Tonality Survey - 330/12 Versus 360/12V64

In speaking of the slight difference in tonality between the Model 330/12 and the 360/12, John Hall has commented
"There is no difference in the strength of the neck to body joint between a 330 or 360. But the neck is definitely stronger on a 330 since the fingerboard has a solid cross section, i.e. no cut-outs for inlays or binding. This accounts more for the slight difference in tone between the two models than the body, as the pickups only sense the string motion which is primarily affected only by a strip not much wider than the neck the full length of the instrument."
This is a most interesting comment that I would like to explore further by obtaining information from those who own both instruments and may be able to make close comparisons.

Controlling for amplifer, string type and pickup type (ie. same amp, same strings, same pickups) what tonal difference, plugged in, do you notice between the Model 330/12 (1993) and the 360/12OS or 360/12V64. Presumably the only signficant difference between they two models would be the wood that has been routed out to make the triangle fret-markers.

Not sure, but conventional wisdom would say that removing mass from the neck should reduce sustain and increase overtones.

Riffmeister: Yes, your theory is one of those under consideration. I am trying to find out whether it is borne out in the practical sense, with the models cited.

Peter, I must say, I am impressed with the sustain and the overtones in my 360/12V64 after the Arnquist mods. Sorry this has nothing to do with your question! I'm just excited about the Ric and can't wait to leave work to use it with my band tonight!! Image
