Truth behind McGuinn 370 lacquer problems

Post by sgunderson »

I recently sold a McGuinn 370 with some minor finish cracks. I have read several times that there was an inherent problem with the lacquer used on these guitars or that it was expermental and that this is why so many RM 370s have this problem. Anyone know the truth on this?

I don't know- I've had 2 of them and they had absolutely no cracks in the finish.

I'll check mine when I get home tonight, but I don't recall it having any cracks. It's been in Southern California all of its life (I'm the second owner).

They were all done with the same finish as we still use, a specialized conversion varnish. If they're cracked, it's because they were frozen or dehydrated (which is really the same thing, as far as the finish goes).

Mr Hall,
my 370 RM had that finish problem as a result of leaving it in a cold room for too long.

The only ones that I heard that had problems were the 4001cs basses. It seemed like alot of them chipped around the bridge or turned brown where rubber stands or hangers came into contact with them. It may just be a couple of isolated incidents, who knows?
