Another 4-2-5
Brett bought Brian's 98 Red Laredo and had it shipped to me for 4-2-5 conversion. I had a few days off for the Holidays so I completed the project. This 4004 has a nice resonance and a nice neck for 5 strings. I used an off the shelf Carvin 5 string nut, a 2 3/8" spaced 5 string off of ebay and swapped the chrome out for black. I wired it volume, volume, tone with Carvin 500k ohm pots. This bass has really nice figuring on the maple fretboard and it also has walnut headwings. My daughter really likes the color. She thinks it is the prettiest bass in the house.

I'm disappointed. When I saw the first picture, I was sort of hoping that you gave your kid another arm or something.
Good work on the bass.

The old couch is in the family room
the new couch is in the living room
new job, new city, bigger house, more furniture, new family, but I still have ric 5 string basses

Well, those confident enough, I guess!jwr2 wrote:who would take a perfectly good Rickenbacker bass and drill holes in it?
Re: Another 4-2-5
Jeff, does the 2030 do well with 4-2-5 conversion? I think you've done it more than once on that model, but wanted to be sure. I'm also "in the hood" so I literally could drive it over if I decided to have it done. The neck seems wide enough.
The 2030 I acquired in the summer is more of a "player" anyway condition wise, so I see little reason to keep it in stock shape. I think the bridge has already been changed out anyway.

A fine job again!
I just put Marcus Miller DR strings on the FG 4-2-5, and I kinda like 'em. I did not realize they were steel tho. I just assumed they were nickel cuz they were DR's! After playing the P/J with Chromes, I no longer like them on the Rick. I have no idea why, it just sounds "flat and muddy", where the Chromes sound tight, punchy, and solid on the P/J. I may be going through a few brands before settling on one for the Rick.

I have converted 4 2000 series basses ... I still have 2 of them ... they are good players ... not as attractive as the 4003/4004 basses ... come by my house and look at my 5 string basses sometime ...rickboy88 wrote:Jeff, does the 2030 do well with 4-2-5 conversion? Nice stuff.
I have Brian's blackened Laredo. Was thinking of tuning it down, or stringing it d-a-e-b. Not thinking of putting holes in it right now, but you never know
