No more #$%^& Xmas music!!!!

Post by jdogric12 »

Anyone else tired of Christmas music? I was handling the occasional atmospheric flurry of carols rather well this year, and even enjoyed the Chris Squire CD for a couple weeks, but then I went bowling Friday....

First of all, it was the middle of the afternoon, and the bowling alley was doing 'cyber bowling' where everything is nightclub-lighting, neon and blacklights. The only 'regular' lighting is directly over the pins so you can see where you are rolling. You can't even see the little arrows on the boards, hence my two games both being under 100 each.

As if that wasn't obnoxious enough, the music was all Xmas music. Not just Xmas music, but really obnoxious songs, like Alvin & the Chip-Monks (sorry Leesh!!!), I Ain't Gettin' Nuttin' For Christmas, Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer, etc, etc.

So that's it, I'm officially "over" Christmas until next year! Thankfully, I haven't had to play any Christmas songs at my gigs --- with one exception: Linus & Lucy by Vince Guaraldi, because Guaraldi ROCKS!!!

Your thoughts? experiences?

Jason: I enjoy Christmas music best on Christmas Eve and when sung with friends during gatherings the week before Christmas.

There was a time, during my ealier years, when I felt somewhat the same as you have expressed. The passing of time does, however, have a habit of changing everything.

Life can be cut short so quickly and without warning and when you know that you have lived longer than you have left, enjoying another listening of Hark The Herald Angels' Sing, brings warmth and gratitude rather than annoyance.

Thanks for all the great discussions that you have been a part of here. It has enriched my understanding of music and even carols. Joy to the world and a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and those you love.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

I can relate to the subject, Jdog. We did 3 Christmas songs at a gig a week or so ago..... at least they were rock'n'roll versions!!

This morning, we unwrapped gifts with the Beach Boys' Christmas Album (an original 1964 vinyl stereo version) playing in the background. I've played this album on Christmas morning every year for the past 44. I'm on my fourth copy (thanks Ebay for the near-mint most recent copy for $15). It is fun and a direct line back to my early teen years.

My secretary (Marilyn) has had a Christmas music station on in her office for the last couple of weeks...I can only hear it if I'm really trying to listen for it, but it seems like every time I walk through, I hear that awful Macca thing. This is not fun. I have heard John's "So This is Christmas" played quite a bit this year: notr "fun" but relevant. Marilyn gave me a copy of Cynthia's memoir of John..should make interesting reading.

It does seem like this year, Christmas has been marketed in a more cynical and mechanical way than ever.

It's been a landmark year--we've seen the entire "green" and "global warming" mentality come to the fore, which is long overdue, along with a sad malaise on the part of Americans in general regarding the wholly abysmal anti-constitutional and anti-human attitude that has been the hallmark of our government for the last 6+ years. Campaigning has begun a year earlier than usual, the 'Net has really come to the fore in disseminating opinion and news, and despite my own political cynicism, I can right now see some hope in my heart for the near future.

I wonder what is in store for Christmas 2008?

This may seem a bit strange to you, but I most enjoy listening to Christmas music about the middle of July. Sure, it has it's place during the holiday frenzy (which makes me more than sympathetic to JDog's remarks), but I find that I actually listen to the words of the carols and hymns when I hear them during the summer months. It also conjures up images of snow drifts and skating rinks which, for a Minnesota boy who now lives in the 98 degree, 95% humidity of VA, is almost Heaven on earth.

On 15 Dec. my string band played a dance and just for grins we tried "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" as a waltz. Didn't work...not enough rehearsal, I guess. We finished off the evening with a hoedown arrangement of "Jingle Bells." It being a 32 bar tune, it worked wonderfully.

Other than that, I pretty much stick to the local classical radio station and they play all sorts of arcane seasonal music this time of year.

Yeah Tony, that's the spirit. Why technically speaking, it's still Christmas until 6 January!

Merry Christmas
