Your Favourite 60s December Release

Post by admin »

Forty-two years ago at this time I was listening to The Beatles' Rubber Soul album, which may still be my favourite.

In any event, December 1965 was a most memorable Christmas for me in large part due to Rubber Soul. There were so many unique songs on that album and the strong compositions by the Fabs made it all the more special.

So let's hear it. What was you favourite release in December during the 1960s?

Same band, different year, Peter. Beatles '65 (in '64). Still a fave today, but in its original EMI release of 'Beatles For Sale'.

Stan: Your excellent choice would be my second pick.

In fact, our group worked up the entire album at one point and I quite agree Beatles' 65 was a fantastic record.

Same year (1965), same month (December), but not the same album and not the same band. The Searchers, "Take me for what I'm worth".

The Hollies' "Look Through Any Window". I'm thinking December 1964? I do remember riding the El train to Chicago's Loop to buy one or another LP. As I walked through the door at Rose Records, this song was playing and I found myself standing still to listen for the first time, transfixed. The moment is frozen in time for me, as my fingers were that day, although I don't remember exactly what it was I bought then. I did take home this memory, though!

I don't think either of these were released in December but IIRC I received them as Christmas presents.

Needless to say I was a bit of a fan!

1969 THE year! Thanks Howard, I clearly identify A Salty Dog with Christmas of that year, and fell in love with it. I heard it by chance when visiting a friend. In later years I even got myself a T-shirt with Hero (the sailor) on front of it. A Salty Dog, at 1:00; one of rock music's most classical moments!

IMO it is indeed a classic, Einar. The live version of 'A Salty Dog' with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is fantastic! :D

Here is mine, "With the Beatles"

I believe that it was intentionally released by Parolphone just ahead of Christmas so people could buy it to put under the tree. That was a pretty smart move by Mr. Epstein and the record label. This album was played an awful lot in our house.

Source Wilkapedia:

"With the Beatles is The Beatles' second UK album, recorded four months after the band's first album and released on 22 November 1963.

The album features eight original compositions (including the first by George Harrison) and six covers, mostly of Motown and R&B hits. Most of the songs from the album were released in the United States as Meet the Beatles! on 20 January 1964.

The LP had advance orders of a half million and sold another half million by September 1965 — making it the second album to sell a million copies in the UK (the first being the South Pacific soundtrack). It stayed at the top of the charts for 21 weeks, displacing Please Please Me, so that the Beatles occupied the top spot for 51 consecutive weeks. It even reached number eleven in the "singles charts" (because at the time UK charts counted all records sold, regardless of format)."
