Where Are They Now - Series
Where Are They Now - Series
Come with me on a journey and let's play detective and track down our elusive quarry and once again expose them to the glare of the spot light. Retired or inactive musicians are fair game and we should spare no effort to find out what our subjects have been up to since they evaded public view and slipped into obscurity. I am hoping that this can be a series that will be both informative and fun.
Our first quarry is Peter Allen Greenbaum better known as Peter Green. Peter was the guitarist that got an opportunity to impress and proceeded to knocked the socks off John Mayall after demanding that the Bluesbreakers fire the replacement guitarist they got in when Eric Clapton decided to go to Greece for a while. Peter played a total of three gigs with the Bluesbreakers before Eric came back. When Eric left the band for good a few months later, the Bluesbreakers promptly called Peter up. Needless to say that was the beginning of being under the spotlight for Peter.
Life was not without it's challenges though. Many adoring Clapton fans booed Peter at virtually every outing. Fortunately his brilliant guitar playing eventually won them over and the rest is history. It was in the Bluesbreakers that Green solidified his relationship with the rhythm section, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood; when he left the group in 1967 he put his own band together and promptly named it Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac. John and Mick provided the constant that he needed to propel him to greatness.
So where is he now and what has he been up to since the day he walked away from his stellar career? Let's try to piece the puzzle together.

There was a feature article on Peter in VG a few months ago. I will have to look but I think I have that issue.

Ahhh The Supernatural
Re: Where Are They Now - Series
Speaking of the supernatural George,
Peter is reported to have been a grave digger for a while. It was probably shortly after he left Fleetwood Mac in 1970 I believe. Then I understand he worked as an orderly in a hospital for a while. Unfortunately he must have been battling demons since he also spent some time in mental institutions.
Perhaps Jeff or others can fill in some gaps here but I understand that in the late 70's and early 80's he did play in various bands again at least up to 2004.
It appears that his trail is somewhat fresh.

Speaking of Peter Green and early Flweetwood Mac - was he with them when they did the song Hypmotized ?

I always liked the guitar in that tune.
Does anyone know who did the guitar in that tune - Peter Green?

Hypnotized was written by Bob Welch.
Re: Where Are They Now - Series
Was it Bob Welch who played the octave guitar style riffs in the song?
Re: Where Are They Now - Series
Here's a direct quote from Bob Welch when asked about Hypnotized.
"The "jazzier" leads on Bare Trees are mine, Danny's are the bluesier ones, which was his forte. Sometimes we'd play harmonized leads; mostly on stage though"

The video is a bit fuzzy but it appears to be Bob Welch and it sure sounds like him to my ears.ric330 wrote:Thanks Brian

Re: Where Are They Now - Series
I had the great luck to see mr. green play many times in 1968-69 at the grande ballroom in detroit michigan. the story goes that they couldn't find many gigs in the usa so they hung out in the motor city where they were dearly loved. more later...
Re: Where Are They Now - Series
Peter Green made an appearance on a 96 album called TWANG A Tribute To The Shadows, who don't mean a lot in US but legends in UK.
Here's the track one of my all time favourite Shadows tracks.
For those who do listen and enjoy it you can compare with the original by visting second link

Re: Where Are They Now - Series
....he was imho a player in the same league with clapton, page and beck, back in those days. a strong finger vibrato and great fraising, very recognisable style, and a good singer.
check out ' green monaleshi' , rattle snake shake or his original version of black majic woman. I heard gary morris now owns greens old sunburst les paul. Green played on a new blues colaberation of some sort a couple of years ago, that met with little sucess.
