Not sure about that, but I would consider the triangle inlays preferable to dots in any case. :D

admin wrote:A very good discussion here. This instrument is difficult to designate and in the world of Rickenbacker classification is somewhat problematic.

Just to set the record straight, I sought the counsel of RIC with regard to the designation of a model number. I thought it far too presumptuous to decide on a model number for myself. RIC was open in discussing the possible range of model numbers and came up with the 1993 SPC. This is the reason I have referred to my 12 string in this way.

Depending on your interpretation there are two obvious ways to look at this instrument. Are the design and features of this reissue Rickenbacker from 2003 in keeping with a US Model 360/12V64 with an f-hole or are they more closely aligned with the UK Rose Morris Model 1993 with triangle rather that dot fret markers. I consider that there are arguments for both cases. In the middle of these two designations there is the 360S-12 possibility but historically when it comes to an S designation this sometimes has been associated with dot fret markers and so this may not be a proper fit either.
Ha, I'd forgotten about this thread. My main thinking about the guitar is that while a 1993 Rose-Morris model was not considered a deluxe model in many ways that it was equipped, a 360S/12 even with dots was considered a deluxe model. One big detail IMHO was that the 360-based guitars all had dual jackplates, whereas the 1993s were all mono, at least the ones I've observed.

The 360S/12 now owned by John Williams has an unbound dot fretboard as well, 'S' basically meaning the same thing as 'SPC' now, "Special". Dual jackplate too.

Thanks, John. We can always count on your for the finer points. My instrument has dual jackplates, both mono of course and a bound fretboard as well.

If memory serves (and only occasionally these days), it went to Andrew Gold.

The headstock on the guitar in the photo looks elongated, is it a distortion in the photo? It looks like it has 12 posts protruding out of the top surface of the headstock for strings, and the keys look larger than usual. Someone enlighten me please, and if possible send me a headstock closeup photo.

Nope, it is just as funky as it looks, and is factory original.

The guitar was made in May 1964 and has 6 tuners on-a-side...standard Klusons you normally find on a Rickenbacker and 6 Grover 1:1 Banjo keys. It was a sample of some sort exploring other 'options' of 12-string peghead design. It is a B***ch to keep in tune.

Paul, that is me holding the guitar..... :)

I remember seeing a rounded 360 with a head like that a few years ago!

Must have been a sample too.

Here is the only photo I have of that guitar, this is cropped to show the tuning key details.

Jeff and Kevin: Thanks for these great photos.

Do we know more about the history of the 12 string with the atypical headstock? JWilli?

I remember seeing a pic of that one too. I'm drawing a blank to who owned it. Definitely a musicician. Scofield? Anyway, I don't think that it came from the factory with that headstock. Maybe a repair job.

Yeah, it was a roundtop 360/12 that had major work done to it, who knows how much. It had a Gibson 12-string peghead, and may have been totally re-necked although it still had triangle CP inlays on the fretboard.

NOT factory at all IMO. Why whould Rickenbacker use someone else's headstock design..?

Well, I thought about it and came up with Butterfield, Bloomfield, Holdsworth and finally settled on John McLaughlin . But Leftybass is correct. That headstock was Gibson.
