Let's talk classical guitar.

Post by kennyhowes »

Although it was my principal instrument at the School of Music (FSU), I'm embarrassed to say that I never had a good quality nylon-string, and I am now doing some homework.

The favoured weapon by the folks there were Humphrey guitars, which have a unique sloped top, sound wonderful, and start at $6k. I had a Yamaha that wouldn't stay in tune.

So: Spruce top or cedar? Mahogany back or rosewood? Do the same rules-of-thumb about tone and woods used apply here as they do on steel-string acoustics?

From what I have seen and read it seems that cedar is the wood most used for tops, and I have seen both rosewood and mahogany for the back and sides. Are you looking for a guitar to play classical or flamenco music on? Maybe Paul can build you a "RIC" nylon string guitar. :P

I too came to similar conclusions. Went and played a bunch this weekend too.

Oh, classical for sure. I don't have the foggiest idea how to play flamenco.

Maybe he can! :P

Thought about it, and will definitely look at some before making my mind up. Don't see 'em every day, for some reason. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place(s).

NAMM is next week too.

Insert Charo joke here. I refrained from making one before, but now that the door is open...

No joke needed. The girl is a very skilled player.

I have always like this guy, going back to '74 when a Spanish friend of mine introduced his music to me. I can see Kenny doing this!

Yeah, Paco kicks ***. But I'm nowhere near that good, plus they didn't teach us fun stuff like that in school!
