660/12TP vs 660/12

Post by JakeK »

What exactly is the difference between these two guitars? I hear the neck on the standard 660/12 is much wider than the one on the TP. Also, I hear the pickups are different. And of course, the big difference in TP's signature on the pickguard of the TP.

What exactly are the differences between the 660/12TP and the standard 660/12?

I was sure that there were no differences, but I suppose I could be wrong about that.

A Petty model will have the hotter non-scatterwound toasters, while any 660/12 made after 2000 will have the newer "vintage-correct" 7.4kohm scatterwound toasters.

The two are the same instrument with the exceptions noted above by JB.

A newer 660 should have a thinner (front to back) neck than an older model. Not sure of when Rickenbacker made this change though.

i have both, both have 1 3/4 at the nut. 660/12tp has nice slim 90's neck just wider than other 90's ricks. new 660/12 has baseball bat huge fat profile neck. to me tp is nicer but when i have bad day new 660/12 is sometimes better for fatigued hand. the difference is big. and when you see them side by side it is visible by naked eye. 660/12tp neck to headstock transition has visible curve. new 660/12 has none of that, the transition from neck to headstock is completely smooth. the difference is right there.
the new one is bit heavier. the paint, like most new "*glo" ricks, seems on new 660/12 thicker. the new one has fretwork that in my opinion could use more fretwork or just some cleaning of the paint of off the frets edges. the new one has those new pickups that i am not very fond of and i'll put high gains on it as soon as i find them for less than arm and leg.. the new one second hand is is roughly half the price of 660/12tp that will almost certainly be second hand by now.. if anybody wants to see it i am in western new york and people ar welcome to come by and compare them side by side.

Oh yes. It's not like New Orleans or somewhere but it's pretty bad.
