Trevor Bolder's Ricks

Post by rickfan60 »

Here is a shot I have never seen before. Trevor Bolder with what appears to be a 60's / early 70's vintage 4001.

He played with Uriah Heep, David Bowie, and a few other noteables. His bass work is prominently featured on Ziggy Stardust. Oh, and he is pictured on page 204 of the Smith book with a white 70's 4001.

He is a talented but somewhat unsung player. His work with Bowie is very melodic and expressive.

The Bowie work was very good and Heep not bad either.

My first band back turned me onto several tunes on Ziggy Stardust. Trevor's bassline on Hang Onto Yourself is just classic.

Hes a very under rated player. He lives round the corner from me as well. He played in The Spiders from Mars, Bowies band in the very early 70's till about 74 I think. He was also a member of Wishbone Ash as well as Uriah but that job didnt last long. He replaced John Whetton in both Wishbone and Uriah. I had the privalege of playing on the same bill as The Spiders when they reformed a version for a Mick Ronson Memorial concert in my my home City in 97. The version had Joe Elliot on Vocals and Phil Collen fro Def Lepard on guitar with Trevor on bass and Woody Woodmansey drumming. They were great. I have great memories of All the Young Dudes with Ian Hunter coming on to take the lead vocal !

On Rickenbackers, I dont think he used one for long... no idea why ? I nearly bought a Precision of his that was in a local music shop a few years back, I should have done but it looked battered to me at the time. Hindsight is a great thing though.

keith, thanks for sharing your story. really cool he lives near you. i've been a fan of bowie, ronson and bolder since i was 10 years old. i have the cybernauts CD which was only released in japan, i believe and sounds to be the same line up as when you shared the bill. the cd sounds great for those who can't get enough of bowie or "the spiders", even if it is a much later. a nice respectful tribute.

when i think of bolder, i think an early 70's slotted headstock EB-3 but i've seen a few pics with a ric. the spiders were a great band and especially ronno was a great player, maybe not technically the best, but no one could touch him for heart and feel. listen to his solo albums, if you havn't heard them.

greatest solo ever

another cool tribute band..... maybe next time i get to japan. nice orville les paul too !!!

The Bowie stuff always sounds good to me.

So much wonderful stuff out there in the early to mid 70's in terms of melody and feel from so many guys.

Yeah, the Bowie stuff he did was really complimentary to the new music Bowie was churning out in the early 70s. Never saw him play anything other than that Gibson EB-3, though. That Ric photo must have been his only gig with that. What a find!
