Anyone know if early 60's 4001's had treble caps?

McCartney is seen in many photos playing with only the horseshoe, yet he had a nice deep chunky sound for the most part which would be just about impossible with a capped treble pickup only. It actually sounds a lot like a vintage 4000 a lot of the time which had no cap. There are a few early 60's 4001 owners here, would anyone care to comment? Do your basses have them? I know 68 and on had them, what about 63, 64 etc? JH care to comment?
