The Kinks

The Kinks are cited as being one of the most influential bands of the 60's. Personally I loved their commercial hits. I also remember that I was bowled over by some of their album cuts as well. It's been a while but I need to get back into this great band. Your thoughts?

The Village Green P.S., Lola Vs. Powerman, and Arthur LPs are stunning. I also quite like their 70s thru mid 80s work, though those are the ones to start with for sure.

Digging around I found this great pic. Those were the days. They were very hip trendsetters on the clothing side of the equation too. Mike Myers must have been a big fan methinks.

Victoria is one of my top 6 songs of all time. Fantastic band, great songs.

I saw them during the "Low Budget" tour....must have been late '79 or early '80. We had a little snow here - and I mean a little - which is all it takes to drive folks indoors and start the panic about getting snowed in for days in DC . There must have been less than 1000 people there. The show was great, the band was great and all in attendance had a great time.

Certainly one of the definitive Rock bands of all time with one of the best songwriters of the genre hands down.

Dave Davies is featured in that BBC4 documentary "Pop Britannia" that I caught last week, being interviewed on the show - although little was shown of the Kinks themselves.

Seemed like a nice guy and certainly was thoughtful with what he had to say, unlike some others that were interviewed.

The kinks are probally one of the top 5 bands to come out of Britain in the 60s.Also one of the bands that influenced so many Artists/ bands some to mention would be
The jam,Kirsty Mcoll,The Fall, Smithereens,Pretenders and the list goes on and on.Mr Davies had a knack of painting a picture in peoples minds with words and thats not very common any more.The kinks and their music still get played by myself and my friends.I like to play kinks on guitar and it always goes down well when camping,played on the acoustic.The kinks are still relevant in my music as they were in peoples life's 30 years ago whether or not a new generation of fans listen to the kinks or not will not detract that they are one of Britain's best musically Influential bands of the last century.

If he was in my closet more than a few years back he may have found some of my old mod gear. My wife routinely says to all and sundry that she does not think that I have ever thrown anything away. If that statement was indeed accurate in any meaningful way other than being a little jab at my penchant for keeping guitars and parts around the house, I would need a place the size of Buckingham Palace to hold it all.

I have to agree with your assessment of the Kinks Scott. They were more influential than most realise and Mr Davies despite being a clothes horse (as well) was and still is an incredible writer.

One of my favorites of the 60's. I saw them in about 1970 in Detroit. Man were they loud !
How much truth is there in the rumor that Jimmy Page played guitar on their early records All Day And All of The Night deffinately sounds like early Pagey. Not to fault them though... The record producers back then did that to a lot of great bands

It sure gets tiring to hear the Page rumors like this. I've never seen any credible evidence in regard to the Kinks. I'd prefer to listen to Dave ANY time over Page. Dave (and John Lennon) pretty much defined rhythm guitar in the 60s and Dave was damn good on lead too.

So true. I always used to smile every time "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" came on the radio. Truly funny.
