Nineties 4005?

Post by danomar »

I was at a music shop in Marietta, GA this afternoon and saw a very nice Fireglo four-string. I thought it was a 4003, but the tag listed it as a 1990's 4005. Odd, methought. Probably a misprint. Then I played it a bit and noticed that the bridge pickup cover sticks about one-half inch above the strings. Also odd, methought. I asked the salesdude and he said they put on the tag only what was on the paperwork they got. Evidently, the seller also traded in an 8-string and another 400x. Strange fruit.

Do rear pickup covers on 4001/3's stick up that high? I always thought they were closer to the strings.

For $1400, I think this one is a pass. Shoulda taken pictures but didn't think about it.

The pup covers can be high if they are mounted improperly...ie. on top of the springs. Generally they should be mounted between the pup and the springs allowing them to move up and down with the pup adjustment.

And with that type of pup, it ain't no 4005. Unless someone REALLY butchered it.

Ahhh but the truly maladroit mount the cover directly on top of the surround. I have seen that more times than I care to admit.

I would go back and take some pics. Find out about the other 4000 series bass too. $1400 is a good price for almost any 4000 series bass right now, with a little negotiating, I'd bet someone on the forum could use it. Or, ask if the store has a web page or something. Maybe the work is done.

That was it, I'll bet. The cover was mounted underneath the chrome bezel but not over the pickup itself.

I know it isn't a 4005. Got one of those already. I think these guys don't really know what it is. The other two basses were sold after a month or so sitting around. I wish they had advertised them on their website. I would have gone straight down there.

I'll go back in a few days and take some pictures if it is still around. I'll give it a second try, too. I paid attention because of the price but lost interest when I realized it is a 90's 4003. I was hoping it would be a 4001. :( The 4003 neck just didn't seem as nice as what I remember 4001's to be like.
