Celestion Blue vs Wharfdale in Vox AC15CC1?

Post by octagon »

I have the Vox AC15CC1 with the standard Wharfdale speaker. This amp works perfectly for me because I just play at home, mostly at low bedroom volume.I have read about the Blue Alnico Celestion speaker and how it is the perfect match for the AC15 but I was just curious to know if I could also play at similar low volumes with that speaker?I just wondered because some people have said the Celestion is twice as loud as the Wharfdale.I used to have a Silverfaced Fender Princeton Reverb and that was definetly too loud for my apartment if I turned the volume past 2.Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm on my second AC15. The first had the Wharfdale, my current one has the Celestion. I absolutely love the amp, and the Celestion is perfect. Whether it is worth the extra $300? Probably so. I see no reason why you would not be able to play the AC15CCX at the same low volume as the AC15CC1. Just tweak the gain and the master volume, and you should be able to dial in whatever you're looking for. I for one do not see excess volume as being a problem with the Celestion.

The Celestion Blue is an extremely efficient speaker it breaths new life in to many amps such as the Blues Junior. It can make a really good sounding amp sounds even better.
I have a Celestion Blue in my Deluxe Reverb and it sounds fantastic. I use Yellowjackets (EL 84 Converters)in the power section for low volume use (Home and Studio) and 6V6 in the power section in small clubs and parties. I had one in a custom combo cabinet with my Blues junior and it sounded awesome. I've had an AC 30 with and without Celestion Blues and to my ears the Celestion Blue really brings out some nuances that you just gotta hear for yourself.

At really low volumes you are not going to get you bang for the buck but if you go out and play occasionally it is well worth it. There have been countless speaker tests where the Celestion Blue has come out on top in the comparisons. After they break-in there is just a sweetness that is really fine. After I replaced my G12H in my Deluxe with the Celestion Blue (Using my Rick 07' 360) there was no question it was a better speaker for me. And I know after it breaks in a bit more, it will sound even better. If you are only going to use the amp now for very low in home use you just aren't going to get what this speaker is capable of giving. It needs some push to get it to breath and some volume to break-in. If you do intend on using it to play out you will be rewarded with a chime that is what the Vox amps W/Celestion Blues are famous for.

Yah, with any of the Voxes, and many other amps too, the Celestion Blue is one of the best choices. With the Wharfdale and a Vox, you could say the amp is a 10 without having played one with the Blue, but once you play one with the Blue, then its as if the Wharfdale is a 10 in black and white, and the Blue is a 10 in color. Just another world entirely my friend. If you don't have the dough to spring for the Blue, then you could aim for one of Ted Weber's Blue Dog's, which are very close in sound for half the price, or an Eminence Red Fang is even cheaper and voiced to sound similar.
