ilan wrote:With its walnut finish, black guard and double binding, this bass is the closest thing to the 4002 prototype (Smith book, p.211). So I'd like to see it with the same pickguard as that 4002 prototype: 5-ply b/w/b/w/b.
i wasn't sure b/w/b/w/b was available - hence the 3-ply idea; but staring at my 4002 was the precedent for considering the multi-ply.

i'll check with pickguardian.

5-ply isn't that rare. Old Gibson guards are 5-ply b/w/b/w/b. If Tony doesn't have it, ask Roger at Jeannie Pickguards, I'm pretty sure he has it.

My luthier, who also builds a modern version of the Ampeg Scroll Bass, has told me that a few years back when he was building the basses for Ampeg under licence, that there was no 5-ply to be found. It was what was known as printers stock. The original Ampeg guards were made of it with the logo machined into it, showing the first white layer beneath the first black one.

Roger at Jeannie makes 5-ply b/w/b/w/b pickguards.
