Tom Petty Playing Rick Tonight - Super Bowl

Post by ric325v63 »

Check it out right now. Two songs with Rick 12, now he's on a Tele.
Just make the time to play guitar!

Campbell was playing a doubleneck in the second half of the set. He started out playing a Duesenberg.

It's a Ferrington, custom-made for him sometime around 1990.

My GOD! That was AWESOME!!! But WAAAAAAAY too short!

Something's fishy about that performance.

The audio sounded exactly like the Sept. 21, 2006 performance from Gainesville. Tom was playing "American Girl" as if it was tuned down a semitone from concert pitch, but played "I Won't Back Down" in concert pitch, not to mention sounding like an acoustic guitar. Mike's Deusenburg guitar sounded exactly like his 1950 Fender Telecaster did that night. Do Duesenburgs and Teles sound the same? :? Mike's Ferrington doubleneck sounded like his '65 Ric 360/12 (Free Fallin') and his '91 350 custom (Runnin' Down a Dream) did at Gainesville. I know the vocals were live for sure.

Tom's RM1993 is beautiful. Looks like a '65 model to me.

I know I'm being critical, but it is was still a good performance, and I'm glad there was Ric action. Now I can tell my (not) girlfriend I'm off to track a RM-style Ric!

Did you notice the 12 string headstock? Tuning keys mounted like a Rick with the slots.

Flying V stage --- That was the old band logo though, I thought that was a nice touch.

The RM was awesome. I had no idea what the 2x neck or blue D guitar were, so thank for clearing those up guys!

I liked that it was straight up rock, pretty much. Even a huge crowd to rush the stage at the outset. None of that ridiculous field of dancers and costume **** they've had in recent years. So, I liked it!

We have a friend who was stageside, literally a few feet from Petty, as part of the stage crew. We'll check with him tomorrow and supplement as to the issues of this being a totally "live" performance.

Here's the link to Campbell's Duesenberg.

Look under the hollow-bodies.

TP & HB's post '82 work pales compared to their 76-82 era. To only have done 25% of four songs from then was pandering to those not fortunate enough to have been around for the good stuff. Then again, he doesn't have Stan in the band anymore, either.
