Three out of the four were TP solo songs - all from Full Moon Fever.

Re: The RIC 12-String Tom Petty Played at the Super Bowl

Tom’s RIC 12-string was just recently acquired (about two weeks ago) from Norms’ Rare Guitars.

It is an original 1963 Rose Morris Export that, when new, was originally purchased from Hessy’s Music in England. This is the same store where the Beatles got several guitars.

It is in near mint condition with the original sales receipt. Tom was so excited to get it and said he was going to frame its receipt. The guitar can be seen on page 258 of Norm’s book, called Norman’s Rare Guitars.

I have tried to buy this guitar several times over the years, but Norm would not sell it. It is a wonderful, great playing RIC-12.

I wonder why Norm wouldn't sell to you, but would sell it to Tom...

I guess Tom was most happy he got a 1993 that Pete Townshend DIDN'T destroy!

Welcome Mac.

If it is an original RM export, I would think it's a 64, not a 63. They didn't arrive in the UK until summer of that year.

Welcome to the forum, Mac.

It was nice to see a talented Super Bowl act for a change, that I wanted to watch and enjoy. It was nice to see his Rick at center stage for a couple of songs too.

If it was an original RM 1993 from 1964, it would have a trapeze TP and not an "R" TP. It was really challenging to figure out what kind of Rick it was while trying to take in the performance. It looked brand spankin' new to me. Couldn't tell if it was a 6 or 12 at first, then had to look for the dot markers to make sure it was an RM and not a 360 OS with an F-hole, then wondered about the "R" TP and if it was a reissue.

DId Rick ever reissue the RM 1993? I never have seen a reissue of that model.

Anyway, it's was great to see him out there with a Rick, even a "guess what I am" Rick!

On the performance, live or lip sync... My guess is: Both! Performances like this are sometimes done "live" to backing tracks, so that vocals, some guitar parts, etc... are live but the mix is much cleaner when everything else is prerecorded. I know for a fact that a lot of shows are done this way, when a large audience, high exposure and short time frame are all factors. If I had to wager, I'd say that Tom Petty's voice, guitar, and the lead guitar were live, most everything else in the mix was tracked and sync'd. But, this is only an educated guess. Great show and great game!!! Thank you, N.Y. Giants!

That thread tells the story of the short lived 1993 reissue.

Graham's (eightmileshigh) Ric collection page actually shows two 1993s from '64 with "R" tailpieces. Perhaps Tom's was in a handful of those exported to England?

Super Bowl halftime shows appear to be produced by out of work music video directors who pay college kids to rush the field and pump their fists into the air, out of time, for fifteen minutes straight.

Good grief, I was patting myself on the back for knowing that the first one was a Duesenberg, then you have to go and pop off with this.....and now the rest of you are debating the differences between '63 and '64s, trapeze and R tailpieces.....I'd give up if I didn't enjoy learning about this so much.

I have Norm's book, and the 1993 12-string he sold TP is a sweet guitar. It would have to be from late 1964-early 1965 production, for they weren't around in 1963 of course, neither were 'R' tailpieces.....

David's old '58 360F is in the book too, and it's captioned as a 1960 model, which is also incorrect.

Norm's book is still awesome, some unreal stuff has passed thru his hands...
