4001 with black AND white binding?

Post by brianeharmonjr »

I just saw this pop up on ebay. It looks like a 4001 BT MG, but it has white binding on the neck. What's up with this?

Yep. RIC used white neck binding on all (deluxe) 4001's, regardless of black or white body binding. When the 4003 was introduced in the '80's RIC began offering black trim (black neck binding, black body binding, black plastic, black hardware).

Alright, I guess I'm just used to my white 4003 BT. This one just struck me as looking really strange.

Sean had a JetGlo 4001 with body binding like that and I think there was another one discussed here as well.

I think Jeff noticed something that a few of us (myself included) did not. It looks like this 4001 has a layer of white binding and a layer of black binding on the body.

I've seen this before on 2 or 3 Rick basses, but its pretty darned rare.

It's double bound.

My 80 4001 WHT/BT had black trim on the body and white binding on the neck.

I don't think ANY 4001's had black neck binding. 4003's, yes...4001's, no.

Great action on that one. Looking at the tailpiece and bridge, it has very little lift, and the bridge doesn't look like it is adjusted very high, so I would be cautious of the neck, especially with how normal the action looks closer to the nut. Also the back bottom of the body looks like it has sat in water and the chrome on the jackplate looks like it too.

Probably just needs a neck adjustment. I like it.
Also ...do I see red side markers?
