An old 4000, refinished blindfolded perhaps?

It's an S model, whatever year it is. I would guess set-neck as the "artist" did not continue the black stripe through the body as they did the neck/headstock. Probably a 4000, but the chrome parts are in really rough shape.

This looks exactly like a 4000 which was on marktplaats.nl (dutch ebay daughther) a while ago. It is a may 1974 bass according to the serial with wavey grovers. I mailed with the guy a couple of times in hope to get a cheap 4000 with a spare set of grover tuners for my '73 4001. But he then asked 1750 euro's for the bass. I guess Maxguitars didnt give him that much. ;-)

Can you say black paint?

The bass looks like it belongs in a house of ill repute.

A ridiculous price for a bass in that shape.

Did anybody else see all the Fakenbackers on their website. They've got several bass and guitar copies by "Indie". That's a no-no.

I also think the fingerboard looks too dark. I've seen fingerboards look dark from lots of gunk getting on them, but there is plenty of shine on that one.

i would like to find a beat up AND affordable 4000 (or 4001-s),and do a 50's makeover on it,with the big pickguard, small bridge, backpainted gold trc,oh and of course a horseshoe pickup. i really like the look of the original 4000 bass a lot,but there is no way i would ever afford a real one,so i have been giving some thought to customization of a later model-although i don't want to do that to MY 4000! :P i should probably approach Paul W. about the feasibility/logistics of such a makeover...
