Thanks, Mac. That's what I suspected - quite common back then. I wonder if it was an RM that never made it to England and became a 4000?
Oh, I really like the grain on the fretboard - my 4003 from 2004 has a lot of the same grain pattern as your 4000.

Thanks for the pictures of the pickup, Mac. That 's a "1st-version" treble high-gain pickup, all right. The bobbin is the same as used on the "2nd-version" horseshoe pickup it replaced. Once again, great-looking 4000.
Re: 1969 4000 MG
Thanks for all of your kind words about my bass and the knowledge about the pick-up...
Much appreciated!

Welcome to the forum, Mac! Beautiful bass there. Such a clean example is great to see.

Beautiful Mac, thanks for sharing!

My, my, that is one beautiful bass. The fact it's so clean makes it even better. Looks like a new vintage reissue. 4000C68?Top Gun wrote:Here are various shots of my 1968 RIC 4000 Bass. It is 100% factory original. It is in 9.5 condition with only some very minor marks on the back (nothing through the finish). It has a stunning Fireglo color and weighs only 8.5 pounds.
It is one of the earliest RIC non-horseshoe basses. The pickup is a very early “hi-gain” that differs from any other’s I have seen (It’s similar to some of the early “hi-gains” as seen on early RIC 381’s) - the bobbin is a milky-white clear color with different looking pole-pieces… very unusual; I have NEVER seen one like this before.
It sounds amazing and has unbelievable output...
The CTS pot codes date to: 8th week of 1968. The jack-plate dates to: November 1968

Re: 1969 4000 MG
I'm kinda late on this thread but I had a '65 4000FG.
It was not routed for a neck PU and had a different tone
than the later 4000s with the rout.

That is spectacular...

The patina and shading on this 4000 is incredible, Mac. I'd have to say that it's easily one of the most - if not the most - gorgeous FG finishes I've ever seen. Absolute perfection! Congrats on such a beautiful bass and welcome aboard!

There are some stunning basses showing up on the Forum lately; that is gorgeous!

Wow, that's sweet, Mac!

Hey Kevin,
I love your new blonde 1969 RIC 4000. Are you happy with it? Question... Do you want to sell it? If so, I would buy it right now... Please let me know. Thanks!

Hi Mac,
I like it so far, but need to spend more time with it. The neck is incredible, but I miss that front pick-up.
Do I want to sell it? Well, no not really, but maybe I could be tempted with the right trade.

Kevin,
I don't have any RIC's currently for sale. What else might you be looking for?

Kev...
You let the 4000 go to Mac, and pick up it's older brother with the extra pick up AND horseshoe!
