Their Satanic Majesties Request

Post by congerz83 »

I have heard that "Their Satanic Majesties Request" was The Stones crack at a Sgt. Pepper. I feel as though i've wasted $7.99. Except for "Rainbow" not much seems to happen.

P.S. Does anybody else realize that it is Paul that starts the first line of the chorus in "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds"? Even in the Anthology version.

Two completely different ideas really and kind of unfair to compare the two. There are things that I really like about TSMR, such as "2000 Light Years From Home", "The Lantern", "Gomper" and "She's A Rainbow". The Stones' record is grittier and more rough sounding where as Sgt. Pepper is a well polished piece of Pop Music that pretty much raised the bar and introduced the "concept album".

The Stones would really redefine their sound just a year later and would go on to record a string of great Rock&Roll records over the next 6 years.

TSMR has its high and low points, but it sure seems like the Stones trying to be something that they weren't. It's like seeing a cow dressed up with clothes and make-up.

I bought the 45 rpm single, She's A Rainbow b/w 2000 Light Years From Home. I got a lot of play out of that single and still like it. I never got into the rest of the album. There appears to be a little warpage and distortion on the 2000 Light Years side of the single that simply ADDS to its appeal!
Just make the time to play guitar!

TSMR was a failed experiment as far as I am concerned.

I like Wyman's rip-off of The Pink Floyd.

Satanic Majesties was a failed experiment all around. It was the Stones trying to cash in on the Sgt. Pepper idea, but they were not in the condition to be able to pull it off at that time. It had been some while since they had done anything really productive, much less toured and none of the Stones really came back from their minor break ready to roll the way that the Beatles did. Additionally, the creative force of Brian Jones, whose sounds had a steady influence on the material leading right up to this point was starting to fizzle out as his personal problems began to take control of his life. Also, the Stones were not the kind of songwriters that could pull off something like this. There are a few gems, but for the most part this is a boring piece of pseudo-psychedelia. I'm not a big Pepper fan either, but I'd rather listen to it than this one.

Didn't Paul and John of the hated Beatles sing on She's A Rainbow?
