1968 360/12 OS

I purchased a 1968 360/12 OS S/N HL1725. I really need help. In the Smith book it lists one 360/12-OS, can this Ric be the last 360/12-OS made? It was made in December 1968. If anyone knows Please advise.

Hi Ira, and congrats on your new purchase. While the guitar you have won on ebay is quite rare, I doubt that it is not a one-off for the year 1968. The exact number will probably never be known. I know of another O.S. in Mapleglo, made the same month as yours...last known to be in California. For the moment we can say that it's the only "known" 360/12 O.S. in FG on the Forum from '68...

The numbers for the late '60s in the back of the Smith book are suspect, while 1967 is not present at all. The collective opinion on the totals posted on later 60's guitars are that they are under by a good bit.

Some of the old-style 12-strings from 1968 were equipped with the converter-comb, another very-rare model.

Thank you for your reply. Is anyone keeping records that you know of of the S/N's from the missing years? If Smith went through the Ric records I would think that Ric would know what the S/N of that one 360/12 -OS in the Smith book. I will try to find out, maybe Kenny would be able to put some light on this black hole 67-68.

I will be in your neck of the woods next week. My other half has a house in Gaston.

I am personally doing a tabulation of 12-strings from 1964, with help from others as well who have data; but I'd say that the best source for finding out what was/is out there is the ever-growing register we have here on the RRF. While not a complete body of work, in time it may give a relatively good stream of data that we can draw some good suppositions from. I quickly scanned the register this morning and for the moment your new guitar is only O.S. 12 from '68 listed. On we go.

IMHO 1967 and 1968 were more than likely banner years at Rickenbacker and there is more out there that what we may think. (Write that book, John Hall...)

The Lake Gaston area is pretty country, haven't been that way in a long time...enjoy!

My 4001 is a Dec 68 FG as well, with a serial number just 41 away from the 360/12.
