Take a look at the number of bids on Ebay "Reborn Baby" dolls, at $2K and up...now, THAT'S creepy!

The craftsmanship in these is fantastic...but the people who actually buy these, dress them up, and take them for stroller-walks, are, IMO, more than a little bit disturbed. Some of these dolls come with fake umbilical cords that are actually clamped...they all come with birth certs.

Ebay USA currently lists about 1200 dolls and parts. Right now, there's one listed at $1025.00, with 22 bids and over 3 days left in the auction.

That baby doll looks a lot like a real baby... but i don't get it. I mean, it's pretty scary, forget the diapers shift — going without diapers duty, or feeding duty, or even teeth growing troubles isn't worth that. Something that looks like a real baby but doesn't breathe, or move, or smile, and never will open her eyes to see what's happening around... etc, etc. I mean, it looks like a dead baby... and i hope my daughter wouldn't want such an item for her doll collection (not that i'd buy that if she would, heh).

If it's the same lady, she was on the Today Show a couple weeks back. Supposedly, she couldn't have a baby after a number of tries, so started making these dolls as sort of a hobby/therapy. Then I guess someone who miscarried wanted one, and off she went.

I don't get it, but then my maternal instincts are noticeably lacking.

And yeah, they kind of creep me out, though most dolls and circus clowns do that to me.

Could be, but I doubt it...there are tens of thousands of people, mostly here and in the UK, who follow this "hobby", and the woman who made the doll in the link above is British.

This a strange topic that is probably best not analyzed.I might be putting my neck on the line but i would maybe suggest that the people who purchase the above items have had some form of tragic child loss and maybe in some ways take comfort in the way a child does with a doll.

Scottie, there's no doubt that such a doll might have a place in the life of someone who lost an infant; in fact. some of these artists take commissions from people and replicate their lost babies.

1. What about the other (majority) of the people who buy and even collect these?

2. How do people deal with loss without having a surrogate doll? It's only recently that technology has made this possible.

3. How do you wean a person off of one of these? This could easily become an unhealthy obsession.

Also see: "uncanny valley" on wikipedia. This goes a long way toward explaining why we are often repulsed by such stuff.

Well, i understand that adoption may be harder and pricier than buying a fake baby from ebay... but i don't get that kind of "collectable replacements" anyway.
On the other hand, i've heard of people who go to taxidermists in order to have a material memory of their favourite deceased pet... and of people who collect stuffed "animals". But babies? Gimme a break.

So was i. Even by my stronger (and, no doubt, better) half a couple of times and our daughter — once. But mostly it were "friends" and acquaintances who, for some reason, find nice and sweet, too good and pure for this rude world little Sheena quite disturbing.

Are you guys talking about that Fender Jazzmaster? I agree that its creepy, but...collecting them is going too far.

And, yes, in the picture it does look stuffed.
