Southern Rock
Southern Rock
Gregg Allman once quipped that calling this music form "Southern rock" is a bit redundant; it's like saying "rock rock."
However, rock and roll mostly started as a result of the music that emanated from the South and rock and roll will forever be influenced by its Southern roots.
I have always enjoyed bands like The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black Oak Arkansas, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, Marshall Tucker and so on. I also liked another Southern band "The Atlanta Rhythm Section" even though their sound relied more on tight harmonies, their music belied their Southern upbringing. Even to the most casual listener it is readily apparent that this band was deeply influenced by those who played Southern rock.
These days Southern Rock has been embraced and integrated into Country and Western. They are calling it outlaw country. So much for genres remaining static.
Any one else here like Southern Rock as much as I do?

Re: Southern Rock
Sure do, Brian! I'd have to put the Allman Brothers and Lynard Skynard at the top of my 'Southern Rock' tree.
Re: Southern Rock
Aitch, wouldn't a band like Midnight Oil be at the top of the tree as they were further South than either the Allman Bros. or Lynard Skynard?
Re: Southern Rock
Wouldn't that be Southern Cross Rock?

*shudder*
I had this stuff pounded in my head at a very young age from my oldest brother and it really turned me off. Although I can appreciate the musicianship (Rossington and Collins are GODZ), the stuff makes me visibly ill when I hear it. A few exceptions to the rule are Blackfoot and some of the early Molly Hatchet stuff.

Well, Jeff. If I was permitted to include Aussie bands as 'Southern Rock' you'd be reading obscure band names for a week!!
The Oils would be on the list but nowhere near the top. My favourites basically no longer exist as bands!

Don't forget the Rev...
Re: Southern Rock
A little old band from Texas. I love those guys. Look for them to be featured soon with their very own thread.

The Atlanta Rythm Section started out life as the Classics IV (Spooky, Traces, etc.) IIRC.

Re: Southern Rock
I find Southern Rock a lot like fried chicken - highly enjoyable but not something you can safely indulge in every day.

Re: Southern Rock
The Allman Bros. were about the only Southern Rock band I liked consistently. So much so, that I have recently begun to wonder what "Ramblin' Man" or "Jessica" would have sounded like played on (gasp!) a Rickenbacker 12 string.
