This should be a fun project. I have the same tuning keys on my 4005WB, they are Schaller M4S tuners. They look nice but are a bit heavy and have some backlash to them. I have a set of Hipshot Ultralites on order with the 1/2" posts that will fit the bushing holes and will shave off a lot of weight. Even though that wouldn't be original, it may make sense to do as the Ultralites are very nice tuners. Image

Thanks for the input on the keys Jeffrey, I'll be looking into some of those for sure.

Anyone got a source for a black model 4000 pickguard?

Wasn't there a board member who made pickguards?

I'm sure WD: http://www.wdmusicproducts.com/ can make you one.

Try Tony Dudzik at Pickguardian, he made a few pickguards for my 4001 a while ago.

'Wasn't there a board member who made pickguards?'. Er... Don Adamek, a.k.a. 'Dr.', if I remember correctly?
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

Thanks everyone for your input, you've all been great in your responses. I've checked out all of these except for Don, and they all want me to send either my original guard or a template, neither of which I have. I do have a photo from a '70's Rick catalog, but thats about it. It seems that this guard is not available anywhere. I would think that there would be a small demand for these anyway.Image

Don built me a 4000 pickguard a few months ago, it was a perfect match to the original onthe bass, I'd highly recommend using him.

Scott - as you dont have a pickguard, why not trace the outline of the bodyface, indicating the screw holes?

Im sure a pickguard could be adapted for it. And go for the 4000 idea its a winner

You can trace a 4001/4003 pickguard and only poke two holes in it for a volume and tone control ... the 4000 pickguard has the same shape and screw holes ...

if you have that template then there are lots of guys who can make the pickguard ...

There are some Kluson tuners from a 3000 something or other on Ebay right now, they say they are the exact tuners for all the older Rics, I think it was a mid 80's bass.

Scott, I'm here in Columbus and have 2 different 4000 pickguards you can use as templates. In fact, the one I have on the bass right now is from a 1975 4000. We could probably get together and you can trace them out, if you want. Being a 4000 owner I say go with the 4000. Drop me a line when you're ready and we can work out some way to meet and trace these out for you.

Tony is in Columbus. That should make it easy for you to hook up with him. He is on Bethel Rd.
