Rickenbacker 450 12 string
How much should I pay for a clean Ricky 450 12 string in the U.K. I have a Danelectro 12 string and a Ricky 360 6 string. Is the 450 a good guitar or should I look at other Rickenbacker twelves? There is no way i can afford a semi 12 string.

It depends on the sound your looking for...
the Solid 12s 400-600 Ricks are more lead instruments and have more treble/clarity, Tom Petty's Lead Guitar Player, Mike Campbell uses his 600 series 12 on most of the 12 string leads on the early TP & the HB's albums, also Chris Stein of Blondie used a 400 series Rick 12, as well as a Burns 12, on some of their older albums ....(their first Bass player used a 3001 Bass, Do I know everyone that ever used a Rickenbacker or what???)most of the new wave 80s bands had one, I guess they were affordable and the late 70s-early 80s Petty factor....
The Hollowbodies 300s are better for rhythm based music, but all have played leads on them, so there goes that theory, but heres a few albums to listen to...
Byrds: 5D, Beatles: Hard Days NIGHT, Smiths: GOD SAVE THE QUEEN, REM: chronic town ep and JAM: Sound Effects....
Check out those Rickenbacker sounds and play the guitar or a 450 thats available, if your asking us here on the forum, I get the feeling that you really want a Rickenbacker 360-12, dont do what I have done and buy 4 guitars to get to the one you really want, saying "I will never get a 360-12 so I'll just settle for this 450 cause its here", why have the 400-800 in a guitar that your not real happy with, when for $100-300 you can be happy... unless you can get a great deal on the 450 and up grade to a 360-12 later or something....Dont get me wrong, the 450 is a cool guitar but you have to be happy with it, dont just settle..
You have a 360 so you know what thats like already...are you happy with it???
Have you looked into an 80s 330-12??? they are reasonably priced here, for close to the same price as a 400-12, if you want a hollow...
Im not knocking the Rick solids but if I was thinking of a solid 12 string I would go with a old VOX XII or new Phantom XII...I always think of the solid body sound being the Hollies/Tony Hicks, Look through any Window, total, Vox XII through a 65 Vox ac-30 top boost, what a cool tone, oh yeah, I can see the checkered top, Mini now...you Brits are lucky B's....70s-80s 450-12s around my area TN-usa-south usually go for 600.00-750.00 and I would think 800.00 pounds should get one in the UK???? I know 450-12s are cheaper here, than a 360-12 for 900.00-1200.00...
Ebay has turned the guitar world on its ear and the prices are crazy... so Im not sure what the markets like in the UK, I may be way off??? Our ecconomy has gone soft, so the geetar market may slow down here real soon...
If you like the 450 cool, they are very cool guitars and if I had a million dollars and could have 20 Ricks, I would have a solid Rick 12, but I dont so I have one 360-12 v64....

Thanks for the detailed advice. I know what you mean by going through several guitars before arriving at the right one. I think most of my favouite music i.e. The Byrds, X.T.C., The Rain Parade and R.E.M. use the semi 12 strings so it could be time to bite the bullet and start saving. Somebody once told me that the Byrds used Fender XII's in the studio sometimes. Is this true? Good to see someone recognising the genius of Tony Hicks, a truly under-rated guitarist, check out Vanishing Girl by X.T.C.'s psychedelic offshoot Dukes of Stratosphear, a fitting tribute to the pop majesty of The Hollies. By the way second hand Rickenbackers are like rocking horse poo in the U.K. i.e. very rare. My 360 was £500 which I consider a real bargain. Thanks for the advice and entertaining response.

I love the Dukes and XTC, its the cowboys and indians, musically, lets pretend we are the Beach Boys today pink floyd and whoever else...... I like any time a real band goes undercover....Utopia, "Deface the music" is good too, the Rutles is another fun CD....the Wilburys were boring though, it was ok but not that good the Dylan stuff was dreadful....

I know Pete Townshend used one for a while during TOMMY and Jimmy Page had one with the YARDBIRD on Little Games, but they also both had 360-12s so its hard to tell what was used in the studio....
Im big into Tony Hicks nut, most folks here on the RIck forum stick with the RICKENBOCKER players.... I like the Bass player, Eric Haydock
(where do you Brits get these names) he was great, the whole band was great, grahm nash was even cool then, they didnt write as much as the Beatles, but a kick *** group....The Beatles always gave the Hollies a bad time in the press for some reason, I think they were jealous because the Hollies were better players and were on a EMI, label and not from Liverpool...I like the Beatles also so, no remarks from you geeks. Im into all those British Beat bands with the funny fills.... I use to own a Austin Mini 850, I now have a MG Midget, so that should tell you how sick I am.....
as far as a Rick 330-360-12 have you thought of buy a used one off Ebay or Gbase??? just eating the shipping/import duty??? tell them your in Blur or Oasis and maybe they will give you a break, they will hear that cheeky accent and think WOW!! he must be somebody or in one of those bands with the funny haircuts from Ang'galand

What about countries around you, Germany or Holland ??? maybe you would have better luck checking there on a holiday????

Pagey's 360/12 is a studio guitar, although it was supposedly played live onstage in 1971. I believe it's a 1966 Fireglo Rickenbacker 360/12OS, and it's reputed to be the electric twelve that Page used to record Led Zeppelin's studio version of "The Song Remains The Same" on the Houses Of The Holy album. Considering "The Song" is an obvious tip of the hat to the latter-day McGuinn/White Byrds (super-jangly electric 12-string with CW-flavored 6-string solos), it would seem to have been a great opportunity as well as a logical choice for Page to use his 360/12. I still have yet to see a photo of it, though. Pagey's known to be somewhat guarded about his guitar collection.

I like this, around the world people have the same sad obsessions as me, brilliant! Do you know if Big Star used Rickies to achieve their joyous jangle-fests? Also where can you get hold of back catalogue by Paisley Underground popsters like Let's Active, The three o'clock and The dB's, such rare yank indie is very hard to find in this sceptred isle that is England . Where are you buggers getting Byrds video's from. So many things I must have, it's like living behind the iron curtain here.

I think Big Star used Fender Strats in the 2nd slot on the switch for that sound, like the Beatles did for Nowhere Man...
All that Paisley underground stuff is out of print over hear...as far as I know...
I grew up on that stuff being close to Athens, GA ....
my generation 28-38 is paying big bucks for the old cd versions of those old bands, they all have BMWs and CD players and cant find it....I saw a Lets Active on Ebay for 50.00!!!!! is that nutty or what...I finally snatched a copy for 4.00....
I work in a used CD store and some that stuff comes through...I will be glad to whatch for it if you really want it...

Life is strange. You are discussing cool guitars and great music with Yanks you've never met and contemplating upgrading from the cute but cheesy Danelectro reissue you kidded yourself was just as good as a Rickenbacker when, opportunity knocks. A guy in Birmingham (home of The Move and The Moody Blues,Rat) is selling a 620-12 for £450. A mere 50 miles from Nottingham (my home town)! Then realisation dawns, it is your girlfriends birthday, the car has just needed an expensive service, the final payment is due on the computer and you're still feeling guilt about the fact that you said the lovely jetglo 360 you bought before Christmas would be the last guitar you ever bought! Common sense and decency must prevail chaps. Off the subject there is a new wave of jangling Brit bands, the best of them being Glasgows Cosmic Rough Riders (kind of Teenage fanclub without the Nirvana bits).Check out Primal Screams first album Sonic Flower Groove, **** vocals but great 12 string licks.

People laugh now when I say something like that...
I would grab it if you can some how pull it off....
it will get you by till you can up grade to a 360 12....
but they will make more....
