They are out there. The official word is there was one for every GC store operating in '86. That figures to be about 60 but they turn up far more often than you would think.

At the rate I buy and sell basses, I usually have some cash to work with. I'm looking for the perfect one, and I'm not sure I've found it yet (seeing how the '72 cleans up with the right parts before I decide on that one). If the timing's right when one comes up, I'd like to try one on for size.

I just thought with the questions for 4002 owners and Blackstar owners, Shadow owners might be feeling left out :).

I paid way too much for mine about 4 years ago. Since then the prices have risen so sharply that it does not seem so bad anymore.

Yes but it was mint condition. I know because I saved some pics from that eBay auction before you won it :) Since then we've seen Shadows go for twice what you paid. And they really are great basses. Ask John Hall... the man can have any Ric he dreams of, and he plays a Shadow.

It looks pretty much the same today. I should probably give it a good cleaning though. Yes, JH indeed loves his Shadow. He let us handle it in the RIC museum and even let us record the SN for Chris's database.

Jake the Shadow is a rather illusive geetar hehe. Sometimes you can find one........and then months can go by without one for sale. If you read between the lines in what John Hall wrote there was either one or two Shadows made for each GC for their 25th anniversary. So the number produced could be anywhere between 50 - 60. The whereabouts of only a few is known. John Hall has one. I have also been told that Chris Pappas has kept info on as many of them as possible. He wrote me that he knows of the whereabouts of 21or 22. I had been looking for quite awhile before I found my Shadow. There are a few problems associated with finding a Shadow these days. First, with such a limited number produced, finding a mint one after all these years may be difficult. Second, it seems as the same few Shadows that do come up for sale are the same ones over and over again and few new ones surface. Like you, I wanted a pristine Shadow but in the end I settled for one with a few bumps and scrapes. Even with its bumps and scrapes it plays wonderful. Lastly, I will admit we are a 2 Shadow household. I have caught this terrible affliction from my significant other.............it is lusting for and buying beautiful Rickenbacker guitars. Good luck with your search it will be well worth it.

I bought one off E-bay several years ago before I really knew what I was getting. I bought it simply because it looked so cool; I had always regretted giving up my white RIC I bought in 1980 and sold a few years later. Since all my other current basses are black on black it was a good companion. When I received it and played aroound on it for a bit I was pleaseantly surprised at how great it sounded and felt. I currently have black Hi-beams on it (more black!), it's an awesome instrument. Good luck finding one!

I've been lucky enough to own a number of cool Rick basses, including the '72 that I have now, and yet the list of what I want grows and grows -- and I suspect in the end I'll end up settling down with some kind of fairly standard, less-heralded Rick. Maybe a new 4003, or a late 80s s model. I just want to try them all first.

Hey Ted! Long time no see!

Although I don't post here as often as I used to, I am still lurking in the "shadows"(pun intended) ;^)

I check ebay everyday and scour craigslist just as much as you guys do and people forward me their #'s.....and I haven't missed a Shadow yet. I've got all the serial #'s from each one logged..... and there still are only 21 or 22 that have appeared in what, 4 or 5 years? I'm still waiting for the other 40 to show up :)

Like kate said, the same ones keep popping up , it just appears that there are more than the accepted "60" or so....

If you don't want your massed-produced, run of the mill, perfect Shadow....I'll buy it from you!

....for what you paid for it.....

Did you get the one from Starcastle, Chris? Man, that guy was a great bassist.
