What;'s the best Guitar/Bass Stand?

Post by ben_brown »

I'm looking to buy some new stands for my RIC Basses and I'm curious of what's out there these days.
What does everyone like in a stand? What's good...bad?
I'm looking for some low profile stands.

Good; Hercules

Bad; Warwick Rockstands.

This from JH and I can verify the Warwick will yellow your binding.

I like the short Ultimate Genesis G-50 stand with the abbreviated vertical mast. It's capped with a big rubber thingie that the back of the instrument rests on:

Any stand Ultimate makes is top quality. My preference is the XL29B. These are very stable, fold flat and have no loose pieces. Hard to find though. I would like to buy a couple more myself.

Paul, I have one of those G-50 low profile stands and dont really like it. I'll bring it to RIO and you can have it. Im sure you'll have another bass or two by then and probably be needing it.

I don't like any guitar stand where the guitar "hangs" on it by the neck. It usually takes two hands to remove it.

I felt the same Ben. But I like the idea of only 2 points of contact, the bass "hangs" from the stand like a wall hanger, and the only other point of contact is a small pad on the back that the bass rest's against.

This stand is very well made and not top heavy like you'd think and the "gripper" is spring loaded. I've never had to use 2 hands to remove the bass.

I think I'm going to pick up one more of these, and get one of these like Paul B. and Jeff S. uses.

I was considering a few of these Hercules Travelite stands for display purposes....
Anyone have any experience with these?

I haven't used THAT Hercules stand, but I I have a couple of the ones pictured below, and I like them a lot. They fold up very small and they're heavy duty. They bring out the duty in my soul.

I don't have a particular one to recommend, several years ago I had my first guitar (a cheap strat copy) knocked off of a guitar stand by my dog (thus breaking the headstock completely off), so I never used them again. I'm either using wall hangers or keeping them in cases. However, what I can absolutely NOT recommend are the stands that hold three guitars/basses in a triangular fashion, once at a music store I saw a guy lift a guitar from the stand, walk over to amp, start playing, and then both guitars on the stand fell to the floor. It wasn't anything that he did, because he was several feet away, just the weight balance changed, I guess. Then about four or five months later a friend of mine who had one, his wife was dusting his instruments and put a Fender Jazz Bass on the stand with a Mustang and a Telecaster copy he'd made, and it very promptly tipped over and broke the neck off of the bass close to the body and damaged the finish of the Mustang badly. I don't know why people continue to make them, but they just seem dangerous to instruments.
Thanks!

If you want a multi-guitar stand, buy the RIC stand; it's top notch, and holds three guitars.

I have a couple of those, and they work great:

They are great if you also have asymmetrical or oddly-shaped guitars. I have a Gibson Reverse Flying V and that's about the only stand in existence that will hold it.

I also have a couple of these---they fold up pretty compactly:

I haven't tried the similar Hercules stand mentioned above---it looks like it might be a little more rugged.

I'm so jealous that you don't even know. I wanted one so bad that it literally kept me up at night.
Thanks!

+1 I use these stands and there is no two hand issue. You hold the bass around the 5th fret or so and put it into the "jaws" and lower it till it locks. Removing is the reverse - grab around the 5th fret, lift, and pull out. These stands are very stable too - on my deep pile carpet with deep padding in the practice room there is no issue of tipping. They stay up. No reaction with the finish with the padding on the "jaws" or the back support pad. JH has posted he uses the wall mount "jaws" holder for his instruments.

I use Hercules stands for my nitro and cv-finished guitars. In all this time, I've only noticed marking on one guitar, an SG Special Faded I bought used. The previous owner had buffed out the finish. The guitar looked good, but I think some of that buffing compound may have reacted to the Hercules foam. I've since taken to laying those dusting cloths you get in typical cased candy over the neck grips for some added protection.

FWIW, I've had my Lennon Rev Casino (light-lacquer natural finish) on the Hercules for about 2 1/2 years with no issues.
