Doom metal.
A genre spawned by Black Sabbath...I think they spawned everything!
Doom is typically tuned down, slow to mid-tempo and generally heavy although some of the newer stuff getting labeled as doom seems to be more 70s style rock like Witchcraft.
This Wikipedia article has a pretty good write up on the subject:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_metal
I'm a pretty big fan of the sound and my faves would include:
Black Sabbath
Candlemass
Trouble
Pentagram(!!!)
Memento Mori
Solitude Aeturnus
Saint Vitus
Buzzard (pseudo-doom but was on Hellhound Records)
Witchcraft
Sahg is a good up and coming doom band: http://www.myspace.com/sahg
Speaking of Hellhound, they were sort of pioneers for marketing the stuff:

I know Mitch is a doom fan. Who else?

Re: Doom metal.
I've always liked the more drone-y, ambient stuff, like Sunn O))), Boris, and especially (if they can even be counted among the genre) Godspeed You Black Emperor! (who spawned one of my favorite bands ever, A Silver Mt. Zion).

I've tried listening to Sun O)))). I just can't feel it.
Have you ever listened to and of the Floor/Cavity/Dove stuff? Dove is the better of all of those projects IMHO.

Re: Doom metal.
About all I've listened to for any length of time from your list besides Black Sabbath is Trouble. I saw them a few times around '85-'86. A great live band that I've recently put into rotation again. An interesting spin for a "doom" type band to be on the positive side of the good/evil religious dynamic. Due to my opinion of organized religion I would typically stick an ice pick in my ear rather than listen to Stryper type lyrics but Trouble pulls it off well enough to make it enjoyable.

Re: Doom metal.
Sean, check out sHEAVY. Their album "The Electric Sleep" could be a lost Black Sabbath album.
