"F" is for Fireglow....and 'Funky'

They are open-back tuners similar to the Sta-Tite Grovers, but these are made by Kluson and have different buttons on them of course. This is the only 360/12 I've ever seen that has had them, but the first batch of 450/12s made had them as well (some of them anyway), and they were made about two weeks from my guitar. We've documented about 4 out of the dozen or so 450/12s in '64 that were made that left the factory with these tuners.

Yeah, but they are original Grovers. Gretsch used these exact same tuners on guitars in the 50s and early 60s...

Here's another pic...

Dale, I was under the belief that these were Klusons rather than Grovers, they are very similar to a Sta-Tite for sure. There was a set listed on ebay some time ago as a set of Klusons, but maybe they were mis-identified. I think they go back even further than the 50's as far as what they were used on....that might be where I got that from.......Glenn Wall and I both saw the auction and talked about them at the time.
You had Glenn Wall's 450/12 a while back...his is one of the 450/12's I'm referring to.

I acquired a June '65 450/12 from Glenn a couple of years back...Shirley this isn't the one you're referring to, John? It has plastic-key Klusons. Original, too.
Re: "F" is for Fireglow....and 'Funky'
My Dec. '64 has six of these open backed tuners and six Klusons. Weird but thats how it came.

Yes, Glenn won his on ebay I think. In fact, two or three of this batch have shown up on ebay in the last 3-4 years.
I have pics of Glenn's 450/12, I'll post a pic of the peghead if he doesn't mind...maybe he'll chime in.

I don't mind. I think the guy who put those tuners up for sale said something about them being on Martins in the 40s, John. I'm actually looking for one more exact match for the 11 that were on it when I got it (one had been replaced with an early 60s Kluson.)
I didn't know four ('64 450s) have turned up so far. That's groovin'. We just have to find the other 8. As Paul noted, my former 450/12 also had less common tuners than one usually sees on these. That one I found in Paul's hometown about 12 years ago (Makin' Music I believe it was.)
John B. was checking the '64 out last fall and noted the flat peghead.

Here's a pic of the peghead on Glenn's 450/12, adorned with the same open-back tuners...

Here is a 365 that I am very familiar with. It's getting pretty funky too....but in a different way.
I know for sure it has the original paint and it is just as orange as in the pictures.
This guitar also has a brace under the top that can be seen that my 60' 360 does not have.
This 365 is a 59' s/n 2V409.
It belongs to a good friend of mine and I was with him when he bought it brand new back then in Tulsa along with a Magnatone 260 amp that I just serviced for the first time.
it really sounds awesome.
Best
Dave

Re: "F" is for Fireglow....and 'Funky'
By the way, Dale did track down a tuner that's nearly exactly the same as the originals on my guitar, the only difference being a chrome button instead of nickel.
Re: "F" is for Fireglow....and 'Funky'
Dave, thanks for the pics of the 365. A number of '59-'60 Capris have this brace. Cool finish. I recently checked out a '59 345 with a much darker finish, most likely due to an Alder wood underneath. And Father Time and some other variables.
Re: "F" is for Fireglow....and 'Funky'
That's a very cool looking 365, that '59...
Re: "F" is for Fireglow....and 'Funky'
Thanks for the pics Dave. Here's another one, from '58....in a color most of us wouldn't believe could come from '58...
