Re: Rick Bass Popularity
If any of you get the Fuse channel on cable, check out "Later... with Jools Holland". He has 6 bands on each show and there aren't many nights when there isn't at least one Rickenbacker being played. Last week I saw 4 or 5 basses and 481.

Look familiar??
Take a close look at that Jazz Bass.
Re: Rick Bass Popularity
Absolutely. Rics were the bass in the late 70s (certainly in the UK), but in the 80s you couldn't give them away.bassassin wrote:It is simply fashion & image - instruments often go through fashion-driven popularity cycles, and for the last few years, much of the image & sound of late 70s /early 80s new wave has been revived by many current bands - along with the trends in instruments from that era.
I don't know if this means in another couple of years (assuming bass fashions are working sequentially) they'll all be playing Ibanez Musicians & Aria Pro SB1000s!![]()

That's cool Ilan, although I bet he couldn't remember which one! Dick Ashby, their manager, told me they didn't have any information about their gear back in the 60's, only from the mid 70's on.ilan wrote:Hey Wints, I had a little chat yesterday with Robin Gibb, I told him I know who has Moe's old Ric bass...
I love my 74 P that was recently acquired, with an extra Jazz p/u also installed. It sounds so different from my Ric, as does the vintage 64 Jazz I was fortunate to pick up last year. They are all great basses, just different.

I can't. It hurts too much. It just makes me want to fix it......
Re: Rick Bass Popularity
Yes, I can second that. In fact, when McCartney guested I think the bass player in one of the other performing groups played a Ric. Paul of course (alas) played that violin shaped bass...blueflamerick wrote:If any of you get the Fuse channel on cable, check out "Later... with Jools Holland". I've watched "Jools" in high def on one of the Voom channels carried by Dish Network in the U.S. The Sam Roberts Band had a whole hour for some show and even though their bass player usually alternates, he played his white Ric for the whole show. They have a couple of catchy tunes.

By the time, everything in business just becomes ordinary...

Im a NASCAR fan. I've been noticing that when I turn on the race on Sunday, they show a promo for racing that features a band with the bass player using a Midnight blue 4003. Catches my eye everytime.

Re: Rick Bass Popularity
When I bought first one in 1977 4001's (no 4003's back then) were even more popular then than are now, don't let a bass's popularity or unpopularity get in the way of whether you like the bass or not. I for one am glad to see Ricks getting the respect the deserve again. Fenders are also popular because they are good basses and sound good.
Re: Rick Bass Popularity
My daughter is at a weekend Fest in Florida. I received an IM last nite reporting that she was watching The Beastie Boys and the bass player was using a Rickenbacker. Thats my girl.
Re: Rick Bass Popularity
Did you see it Kevin?????
Its Matchbox 20. The title of the promo is something like "60 years of NASCAR"
You gotta love a 4003 while watching the race....
I hate Kyle Busch....

Nah, I missed it. Our HS basketball team had a playoff game that we went to instead. Maybe next weekend.
