The Who

Post by winston »

Here's a band that broke every convention known to God and man and they were enormously successful in the process.

In the mid to late sixties one of the sets that my band played was completely dominated by Who songs. Even the lesser known songs found their way into our Who set. A local DJ who often accompanied us on our gigs remarked one time that all he had to do was close his eyes and it felt like he was at a Who concert. Such was their influence on my band. Suffice it to say I have been a huge fan of the Who from the day I first heard "I Can't Explain" on the radio, to the first time I saw them in a packed 300 standing room only club in Woolston, Hampshire, England to the last time I saw them in concert in Bothel, Washington State, USA.

In the ealy days John Entwhistle played his bass in a manner that I had never heard before. He was phenomenal and a groundbreaker. Pete Townshend could knock your socks off with his guitar playing and intensity and Keith Moon wrote the book on playing drums in a heavy rock band. Roger Daltry neatly tied it all together with his impassioned vocals. They were great then and the remaining members still are today.

Your thoughts one way or another. You either love them or they did nothing for you. All comments welcome.

To this day the best show I ever saw were the Who in '73, and I've seen a lot of shows, including those four lads from Liverpool.

Hahaha,

I kind of figured that you would be all over this one Scott. I actually thought that you would have started a thread here yourself quite a while ago. Beside me you must be their biggest fan.

I was as much a Who fan as a Beatle fan back in the day. I still remember going to the local department store and buying Tommy on the day of release, going home and listening to it straight through. Incredible!

For the longest time I had my friend's radio station copy of I Can't Explain that was autographed by all four band members (wow!) ...I was able to track him down (after losing track of him for at least ten years) and return it to him - was he ever happy to get it back!

The 'oorible 'oo are EASILY my favorite band of all time. It's rare when a band can consist of 4 complete masters (yes...even Roger).

Keith Moon DEFINES Rock drumming. In fact, it's not even so much drumming as it is the extension of one man's individual personality on his instrument. Absolutely phenomenal.

Entwhistle revolutionized what the electric Bass guitar could do (heck...just listen to the My Generation solo done in 1965!!! Nobody else was even close) as Noel Gallagher said.."The bass solo on My generation...I mean, if you could put that into words, that's what you'd have on yer fookin gravestone, wouldn'*****?"

Townshend more or less created his own class of rhythm guitar. He can (and always has been able to) cut leads with the best of them, but it takes a certain master to craft rhythm parts that sound simple, but are actually intricate (see the correct method of "substitue" for example). Plus, he is the ONLY artist who can destroy a bevy of extremely rare RM model Rics, and keep my respect.

I particularily like their High Numbers period. I think the band had the most fire and attitude during their Mod phase, covering R&B tunes with absolute fury. That attitude more or less continued on through 1965 (or up until the Substitute single). I Can't Explain is the greatest pop song ever written (IMO), even though Townshend still hates it.

amazing, really. I'd take them over the Beatles and Stones combined!

Cheers,
-Collin

For those of us who got to see The Who in the early 60's you will likely recall something that is still a vivid memory for me today. This band was LOUD. The other thing that struck me immediately (no pun intended, think first record label) was that they were way way better live than they were on their records.

I have to agree with Stan. No other band has ever made such an impact on me in a live situation. I have seen some of the greats and this band was order made from chaos. They were electrifying and unbelievably good.

I had the chance to see the who in Birmingham I think it was 89 for the 25th anniversary tour and Kenny jones was on drums.Fab gig and have to reiterate what Brian said the who were loud, my ears were ringing for days.I might add that i was only 16 at the time and my parents let me go with my friends and stay at a hotel.I naturally got out my box and had a wonderful time! What a weekend Now if my kids were 16 and they said that they were going to Birmingham for a weekend to see a rock concert what you you think id say? One of the things that stick out for me was the massive Union jack back drop and the fact that id smoked too much(Guess what)But id have to say seeing the who IS a life changing experience for the better!Heres one of my personal fav vids EXPLOSIVE!of coarse this vid is the topic of many discussions.

Count me in the Love column. One of those groups that are a confluence...like the Beatles, they are all excellent on their own, but together they are transcendent.

Moon: often described as "symphonic"...I agree. One of the most bizarre drumming styles we'll ever witness. Undeniably effective...but also just plain weird and improbable, especially when you look at him stumble into his seat. Strange blend of relaxation and stress, total concentration and apparent distraction, precision and accident. Just a rare breed.

Daltrey: the one who started the group, but also the one who nearly got the boot, who was actually an angrier man than Townshend, who had a rough time keeping up with the increasing talents of the other three. But he definitely caught up. One of the best rock singers of all time, and also a stellar showman with that signature lasso of the microphone. Good actor, too!

Entwistle: not much new to tell anyone on THIS forum. He was thunder in a bottle. Also a great backing vocalist, always impressive when someone can devote great concentration and delivery to a vocal while also ripping out an inventive bass line.

Townshend: such a Great. A Great guitarist. A Great Songwriter. A Great singer. A Great lyricist. A Great recording artist. A great innovator. On and on...and he still sounds great. Not much has been said yet about his songwriting...everything he did, it seems, was breaking new ground. His songs were always challenging, never the same old message, always both thought-provoking, catchy as hell, and displaying a high-bar of musicianship. Then of course he would take it over the rainbow with his incendiary performances. Have you ever tried to do one of those windmills? You could easily slice your hands into bloody shreds doing that...I promise ( )...and he often did.

I often view them as part of a mighty British triumvirate: Beatles, Who, Stones. Your grandchildren will be rocking out to this band.

Gary, that was good of you to return the original but I hope you kept a snapshot or a photo copy at least of their autographs.

Mark, I could not agree more. Beatles, Who, Stones, says it all. Now that would have been a dream concert lineup. The Who would have upstaged everyone else though I am afraid. They were by far the most exciting band that I have ever seen at a live venue.

Yeah, the closest thing to that scenario was the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, considering Lennon was there...and the Who were so much better than the rest that the Stones didn't want to release it.

One of my "life philosophies" is that we are here to do as many good deeds as possible, whether they be for a stranger, friend, or relative.

IIRC I do have a photo of the label with all of the signatures in my "analog" photo archives.
