I need a part for a 1960s tuner

Post by 620tt »

Hi guys,
I have an old bass, but i'm missing the large gear and screw on one of the tuners. Would anybody have the parts they would sell me? I posted a picture of what they look like at:

Welcome Scott,

You just missed out on Tony C selling a couple of these. They are reverse Klusons used on Ric basses up until late 68, early 69. They were also used for a short period in the mid 70's. Someone here may have a couple spare...

What year bass do you have? Any photo's?

The bass is a '66 Mosrite Ventures :? . I have a Rickenbacker 620 also. I picked up the mosrite bass a few weeks ago. Its all complete besides it's missing the gear, screw and washer in one of the tuners. Rickenbacker and Mosrite used the same ones. I hope one of you guys can help me out, or point me to a sollution.

I think that Gibson also used the exact reverse klusons...my 66 eb2 has them as does my 65/66 Airline pocket bass....I would just keep an eye on ebay parts for a single tuner...dm

Sets of reverse tuners are fairly easy to find. It may be difficult to locate a single gear though.

I'd take a set if anyone here has some to sell. Does Schaller or anyone other manufactures make them as a direct replacement for Klusons? All the aftermarket ones I have found locally were all for Fender size shaft diameters.

Hi Scott,

This may be heresy here, but nice to see that someone else out there plays Mosrites as well as Rics.

On the tuner, Ric have a Schaller part available at the boutique that should fit (sku 00550). Hipshot also make a Ric replacement tuner (HB5). They won't be reverse-action, but they should do the job. I have a set of the Schallers and they are the same size in terms of plate and shaft as the machines on my '74 4001, which I believe are Klusons due to the fact that they are reverse-action.

Just as well you aren't looking for the later goose-foot tuner. Those things rival the wavy Grovers in terms of rarity and expense.

Yep, those pictures look familiar!

I should have listened to you Andy and waited a bit longer to list them.

Darn near gave them away too!

Would these be correct on that bass? I got these with the '65 Ventures bass I just received, and someone else has told me they're not original. That bass has replacement tuners but came with these potentially original tuners. Not sure why they're off.

I'm unfortunately in the middle of a dispute with the eBay seller over the bass (it arrived with major pickup/wiring problems), so I can't do anything with them until that's resolved, but I'll keep you posted.

Jake,
I have pickguard off and pickup out (mines a single pickup). If you have any questions about the wiring I can take a look at mine.

Thanks! I'm a little reluctant to take it apart quite yet. Basically, I'm getting barely any output from it (single pickup as well). It picks up the G string OK, and the others practically not at all (but just a tiny bit, so I know it's not dead). Raising the pickup height helps, but not to the point where it's usable. Part of the problem might be that the lower strings don't cross quite right over the pole pieces, but the seller claims it was working fine before he sent it, so that shouldn't be the extent of the problem. I'm hoping it's just that something came loose, but I want the seller to either commit to paying for repairs or take the whole thing back before I have a go at it. Seems like a weird problem though.

Jake,

Sounds like you could have a broken or loose magnet (or a bit of both). One way to check is to see if the pole pieces are all equally magnetised using a small iron/steel screw. I suspect that you'll find the pole pieces on the e, a and d strings are less magnetic than that on the g. This may be a simple problem to fix. If the break is nasty, you may either need a new magnet or a new pickup. If it's not the magnet, then it's a really weird problem, as the response form the g string indicates the coil and harness are ok, unless there is some strange bug in the harness that is killing all the frequencies below the open g - but that would suggest you would get full volume on the d string from fret 5 and above....have you tried this?

If you end up end up needing a new pickup, I have a Mosrite '60s vintage one somewhere in my parts bin. I will have to double check that it's working though - it's been there for a year or two. The project it was intended for never eventuated, so I'm happy to let it go to someone in need, provided it's ok of course!

Scott, how about these?

I unfortunately ended up returning the Mosrite for a refund, but this looks like a full set of the tuner you need.
