Coated Strings

Post by captsandwich »

Out of curiosity, I picked up a set of Black Diamond Nylon coated strings last week. Has anyone tried these on a 330? The guy at the shop said I might lose a little high end, but I play really trebly, so that might not be a bad thing.
Should I just put them on my Strat? They looked really nice on a black Tele with a maple neck in the shop.

Well, I tried flats, which are coated (I realize yours are not the flatwound variety) on my 370 and I DID NOT like them. I did lose way too much high end sparkle.

On the other hand, I put some on my Strat and they sounded awesome. The moral of the story is, put them on and leave the ends long. You'll know immediately if you like it or not, and if not, stick them on the Strat. I think they really give the Strat a different tone.

I use to make a generality that I liked flats on Single Coils and Rounds on humbuckers. Now I'm starting to think that I like flats on pups with slug magnet single coils and rounds on everything else. I think this would apply to all coated strings, but I haven't tried the coated roundwounds yet, except Elixirs on acoustic. They have a REALLY thin coating though. I am back and forth on those.

I think what you may find, even if you are trebly, what will happen is a loss of CLARITY on the high end. It will be trebly, but muffled, or not particularly bright, like a dead string. I guess it depends on the amount of coating too.

Report back and let us know what you think. I have been thinking of trying these http://www.juststrings.com/drs-ex-rd-11.html on my Firebird Red Power Jet b/c they woud look oh so cool!! 8)

In order for the color of the nylon coating to show, it's necessary to put on a layer that's .001" or so. (I haven't taken a micrometer to these--yet.) The act of putting a plastic coating on a string is gonna completely change the resonance and kill the "sparkle". This is an actual plastic coating, and it's relatively thick.

Elixir's coating, however, is molecule-thin and will not affect the tone in any appreciable way. It's not for looks, but for its anti-corrosion properties.

Think of it as a coat of paint vs. a coat of wax.
