Tone comparison...

Post by rickaddict »

Which do you like better?

Fab Faux covering "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," Will Lee on a Rick bass:

I know which one I like better!

I like the rounder tone of the Rick better (most likely flatwounds on it), but the Jazz Bass/Bass VI combo absolutely nail the tone of the record in the second clip.

It is impossible to make a valid comparison as the recordings are so different.

Is that SG in the first video the real one or a copy?

Probably a new modified "Historic".

That's Jimmy Vivino on guitar, correct? It could be an Historic or the real deal, but given his penchant for "guitars du jour" on Conan's show, I'd guess it's an Historic. Killer tone what ever it is! Such a great group of musicians.

Did you notice the "special" paint job on this SG? If this is the "one", then it is/was Eric Clapton's SG that he bought in '66/'67.

Todd Rundgren bought Clapton's SG about 1971 and then sold it around 2001. I remember seeing some repros for sale last year somewhere on-line.

There's also a rumor that Clapton's SG was the one George had during the Paperback Writer sessions, but George gave his SG to one of the guys in Badfinger.

Jimmy Vivino plays a repro Fool SG.

I know a guy over at BGC does them. His work is incredible!
