I intentionally left it as-is to have a little chrome left. I tried everything with and without black screws and, for me, I like just a little bit of contrast offered with the silver screws and neck pickup cover.
Jeff is right, though. I was planning on getting a second chrome surround and either anodizing or painting it. Not very difficult, especially if you own motorcycles and tend to do that kind of stuff often. The treble pickup cover is an example: I roughed it up with sandpaper and then painted it with urethane black gloss from a spray can. I would have preferred epoxy but could not find any. It got scratched a bit when adjusting the pickup back up (because the cover scrapes the surround by design), but those are almost impercetible. The top part is nice and durable.
I never was partial to the older style knobs. I like having the text on them. Maybe I just need the reminder for my enfeebled brain.
And yes, call Chris at Pick of the Ricks. He hooked me up with the black treble pickup surround and black tuning gears. He's the archetypal old motorcycle dealer of RIckenbackers.
