Re: Bending shoes
Thanks for the advice everyone - If i decide to do it, I suppose I should do it myself. Seems simple enough
any advice as to where to place the stretching apparatus? right by the open end? little further in? optimum measurements when to stop?
I swear I'll stop asking questions after this.

Re: Bending shoes
Put the "stretching apparatus" near the opening. You want to eyeball the angle as it is somewhat up to you how much of an angle you want. I try to match the radius of the strings so when you adjust the height you maximize the clearance from the strings. The HSPU on my 4001V63 has a bit more spread that that on my '73 4001. Here is a pic of that on my '73 4001.
Re: Bending shoes
Jeff, the RIHS I have on my '04 4003 has smooth metal shoes and I have no qualms about stretching those shoes, but the shoes on my '93 V63 have what looks like cast metal on the inner surface of the shoes and I am worried they may snap if indeed they are cast metal. Any input or thought on this? BTW, those shoes will not take any magnetic charge.... Haven't tried the '04 shoes (from a late C64 bass).
Re: Bending shoes
Yes, they were Steven. The new owner bought the bass, a set of flat grovers and now it's all original again.prismacolor2 wrote:Very nice andrew! Mine looks very much that one. Are those tuners larger diameter?
Re: Bending shoes
Wow, beautiful bass!!!! Where do people find these things? Those pre-skunks are my faves....just like my Feb 72.
Re: Bending shoes
I would guess '71 too, but there were some early '72's that had the walnut wings. I'm not sure when that changed.prismacolor2 wrote:Kevin, I'm not sure - the jack plate has been replaced - the pots say 71. This is the first I've seen with walnut wings and a short headstock - does that help date it? Brian Barretts site said 72 but a few local cats think it's a 71.
Pacealot, Thanks for the link, I may just try it myself. Off to check it out now!
My '71 is in the middle.

Re: Bending shoes
pots are 71 - i know thats just a part source code. I'm stumped without the jack plate.

Re: Bending shoes
Steven,
Does your bass have binding on the end of the fretboard near the toaster or is it bare wood?

Re: Bending shoes
With the pots at the 47th week of 71, it would have been a late bass, if it was a 71. The FG shading of Kevin's 21 fret bass is more like the 70 FG, where your example looks closer to mine Steven.
We need a photo of Bob T's 71....

Re: Bending shoes
Here's something else to think about, and maybe it means nothing. The pots in my Feb '71 are from 1967 which is the same as what Sergio's 21 fretter has. Could Steven's pots be original to the "Guard" which is from a later date?
Hey Tony, what are the pot dates in your March '71 'Burg?

Hey Wints,
I just emailed pictures I have of someone's '71. I don't know who's it is, but it's beautiful!

Re: Bending shoes
That mean's it's at least after the Dec 1970 - Feb 1971 time period.prismacolor2 wrote:It is boundteeder wrote:Steven,

Re: Bending shoes
This is exactly what I'm wondering. I know Fender history in relation to pot codes/sourcing/years-used but the Rick thing is foreign to me. That's why I'm here.teeder wrote:Here's something else to think about, and maybe it means nothing. The pots in my Feb '71 are from 1967 which is the same as what Sergio's 21 fretter has. The holes in my guard line up perfectly (if i found a finger rest, I would drill it)
- what year did the guard shrink in size (again)?
Thanks for all the help! I love learning this stuff.
