Considering I might be interested in doing something like this in the future, I compared a Hi-gain with a P-90 template and the Hi-gain seems to be about 1 mm longer (maybe about half a mm wider on each side), and about the same front to back, so all you would have to do is rout deeper (kind of a pain with the neck pickup though, although not too hard).

It's also easily reversible, all you would have to do is glue bits of wood to the bottom of the cavity.

I still wouldn't call it butchered. It's a great sounding pickup installed cleanly and professionally in a guitar.

If he used a spoon to enlarge the routs.... THAT's butchering!

Naw, the butcher's choice is usually a Dremel tool and a 1/2" sanding drum!!! Makes the guitar and room smell like a sausage smoker.
