She's comin' home........

Post by incubus2432 »

Well, Marc offered me first crack at buying back my ex-Laredo so I jumped at it. I don't regret selling it but I certainly do miss it and I think that down the road it may turn to regret....especially if I passed up the chance to buy it back now.

Part of the reason for buying it back as well is due to the fact that I'm going to sell the Wal. I realize that this is a Ric forum and I'm sure that most of you know that I am a loyal fan of Rickenbacker basses (even with the occasional issues) but I must confess that my Wal is by far the best sounding bass (and best range of wonderful/useable tones) that I've ever owned and it plays like a dream....especially for a 5-er. Unfortunately it appears as though I may remain without a band for longer than I thought and I just can't justify hanging on to this expensive of a bass for home noodling alone....I bought it to have a 5-er to cover all of my live playing needs on it's own. So it'll, painfully, go on the block soon.

So back on topic. Plans for the Laredo include a filter based preamp (Wal/Alembic-like in function) for some tonal variation and just to be a little different. I originally was going to go with the eq-based U-retro by John East but decided instead after reading many reviews to go with the ACG EA-02 in either the 3 control or 5 control model (made with John East BTW). http://www.bestbassgear.com/acg-eq-02-two-pu.htm Unsure of which knob layout will look best so I'm waiting until I get the Laredo back to try some layouts before I order. I realize I'll have to enlarge the control cavity, make a new cover and open up the toggle hole and drill two new holes if I go with the 5 control. The 3 control unit will look no different than the VVT layout but I'd prefer the passive mode available with the 5.

I'm looking forward to getting this thing back and getting into some new tone trouble with the mods.

The 4004 is a nice bass ... kind of an unknown quantity in the greater bass world ...

Agreed Jeff. The 4004 is probably the most underrated bass of any kind out there. When Brian offered the bass for sale, the only reason I bought that bass was because it is a special one, and I wanted to make sure it remained in "the family". Glad it's going back to who it belongs to. I will have my own 4004 one day.

What I found odd though, was that despite me advising Brian of the headstock repair, the shaving of the horns, and it's brief bout with a chainsaw, he still feels the need to own it...

I love a happy ending and I'm not a fan of Wal basses so......

nice!

Seriously, if you love your Wal that much and you can afford it, you may want to keep it. It seems the moment people sell those things - they are priced out of the market. All I'm saying is be sure.

Brian, if you like the Wal you've got hang onto it. You won't regret it in the future. They're expensive, difficult to get hold of, and vary a great deal, and you might not find another like it.

While I love the Wal it is a sack full of cash that I can use at the moment and I'm really not putting it to it's full use (IMO).....live gigging. Also mine is pretty plain as far as the figuring and I'm actually partial to the black poly versions. I'll list it and if I don't get what i want for it I may just get it refinished and call it a day. I don't have to sell it but I think it's the best move. Or maybe I'll sell the LK......

Talk to me about the LK when when you're ready.

Why not convert the Blackout into a 5-string? :) Then you will have no reservations about selling the Wal?

I might in the future but it will require a refinish of the headstock......I'm not a fan of the other options. I have no reservations about selling the Wal, the situation is what it is. I've always only hung on to what I have a use for.....any more seems a waste to me.
