1964

Post by beatlefan »

My wife and I had the pleasure of seeing the Beatles tribute band 1964 last night at GW University in D.C. WOW!! The guy playing John was right on! Looks, mannerisms, and especially the music! The way he held the pick, the strumming, etc.....When they did "This Boy", I got chills after the John solo....

"George" was also brilliant both musically and with his mannerisms, the foot shuffling, the slight little hunchy way he held the guitar..etc...

I HIGHLY recommend seeing them, if you haven't already!
Anyone else ever experience this group??

The Tribute is a must for any Beatle fan. Great show and talent. Their performance will be second to none Image The unsung heros of this combo are John Dobbertin and Dave Stehenson. These stage and FOH cats are the best around. Great guys and willing to share info. Band is wise to give them a spot on their web site. Rock on!

another good tribute band is The Return - www.thereturnonline.com ...they are based in atlanta and play alot in the south....they play reissue ricks, gretsch, and hofner and it doesn't take much imagination to feel you have gone back in time to 1964....check out the photos and listen to the sound clips on the website.....

I understand there's a lot happening in NYC for the Beatle's 40th anniversary of Ed Sullivan/charting here in the US. I got that info from links on the Little Steven site, but if any of our NYC friends could shed a little light on this, it might be of interest to us non New Yorkers.

Haven't seen them. Although I'm near the Canadian border in North Dakota so I rarely get to see any live music. Sounds good though. Hey Bob, are you from MA?? I grew up in Lowell and go back to see family every spring. Saw many concerts at the Centrum back in the '80s.

You all seem so positive about the Beatle tribute bands. I sometimes find it sad and pathetic that 50 year old men are dressed up as 20 year old Beatles. I admit that they are talented musicians, but I would like to hear original music from these bands. Maybe it's just me.

A friend's friend plays bass in Led Zepagain and Jimmy Page met them backstage at the HOB (Hollywood)and comlimented them on their attention to detail and posed for photos. They're making money. I'm playing my originals and making zip. It's a good job (tribute bands) sometimes. And there's a huge market for it. Supply and demand!

Post Script:
One can no longer hear Zep, or the Beatles or most of the best bands perform, but live and loud is a good way to experience their music. Just as orchestras have been performing Beethoven and will continue to do so, "tribute" bands are the only way to hear some great rock and roll live. Also, if one likes to play, and can make a living at it, wouldn't that be a dream job(if you're not fortunate enough to be famous)?

Scott,
Yeah I'm from Millbury a little town about ten minutes from Worcester, I used to live about 5 minute's from the Centrum in downtown, I've played in Lowell a few times in the past few years, once on a radio station, don't ask me the names of the clubs though. I'm currently in Lima Perú but will be back in Worcester in a few months.
I think a good tribute band would be ok for a while, I'd like to do something like Ten Years after or some other band a little more obscure that you don't hear every day on the radio, well there goes the money.

BRAVO!! Well said, Jerry!
I was too young to experience the "early" Beatles in person....I started getting into them in high school....mid 70's
For me, the tribute bands are a way of "experiencing" what the phenomenon known as the Beatles was all about!! (other than dvds/videos).
I'll get to see the FAB FOUR in Las Vegas this March (however, I must endure a Celine Dion concert for balance)...... ;)

I can't think of a surer way to kill my enthusiasm for Beatles music than to be in a tribute band. I mean the ones where they dress, play and use Beatle mannerisms, scripted patter, etc. Sure, it'd be fun for the first month or so, but keep in mind you'd have to do it EXACTLY the same way every time, and no one wants to hear ANY of YOUR ideas, you can't embellish, etc. At least it seems that way to me. Kinda like working at Disneyland. Great at first, but once you see beyond the illusion...

nono! its like an art form almost and it very hard to do correctly, no one can ever do it correctly in the first month, or ever for that manner. One becomes obsessed with getting the little things correct. Mannerisims, tones, accent, hidden chords.....etc

I can see where it could become very monotonous, and suck all of the fun out of The Beatles' music.

On the other hand, it could offer the opportunity to gain a significant amount of insight into the music, and into the minds of The Beatles themselves. For me, I think this could only have a positive effect on my enthusiasm for the music.

Besides, I don't have any of my own ideas, anyway!

It's definitely an art form, but no art form is everyone's cup of tea.

Milk, Alex?
