Going to see McGuinn!

Post by JakeK »

My mom bought me two tickets to go see McGuinn on May 9! I'm excited, and I'm going to ask my best friend if she wants to come with me. She's a senior in high school, and she loves Rock and Roll, and I think that two tickets for us to see McGuinn would be a good Graduation present for her.

I hope McGuinn uses his signature 370/12. I almost have half a mind to bring my TP and let him play that instead!

Not to dissapoint, but he'll probably spend more time playing an acoustic 12, or his Martin Acoustic (with a 7th string, G octave).

Either way, it's promising to be a good show! enjoy it!

As long as he uses it, I'll be a happy camper!

Since about 2001 or so, Roger has declined to sign autographs after shows. The two main reasons were the ever-increasing number of items he signed showing up on eBay, and the fact that the signing sessions were getting to be as long as the gig itself. There's a decent likelihood that there will be pre-autographed CDs on sale, but little chance there'll be a meet-and-greet with McGuinn himself.

The show should be fantastic. Roger's one of those rare 60s performers whose voice and playing have markedly improved with age.

It was back to the Wolf Trap Barns last night to see Roger McGuinn (we saw Chris Hillman and Herb Pederson on Sunday -- another fantastic show). When it comes to Roger's music, I'll admit that I'm probably not the most useful reviewer insofar as I almost always love all his performances. Last night was no exception.

He was in a great mood and outstanding voice. The show started off with beautiful Rickenbacker 12-string versions of My Back Pages and All I Really Want to Do. Shameless plug aside, prior to the show Camilla told me that the JangleBox sounded great at the sound check, so Roger had it cranked. In my opinion, the Ric soared.

Roger alternated mostly between his Martin 7- and 12-strings, with a few bits of banjo thrown in. It was funny how Roger gave his usual introductions to the songs, then without much context just started talking about Gene Tryp and the force field before playing "I Want to Grow Up to be a Politician". He then proceeded with the Gene Tryp narrative, culminating in the tremendous "Return of the Chestnut Mare" (which may or may not be the actual title of the song). A cool trick: he switched guitars in mid-song.

Three other unusual standouts were Dreamland, One More Cup of Coffee and 5D.

All in all, this was a wonderful evening of terrific music.

My Back Pages [R]
All I Really Want to Do [R]
Finnegan's Wake [7]
Willie Moore
Dreamland [12]
Pretty Boy Floyd [7 or B, can't recall]
You Ain't Going Nowhere [7]
Drug Store Truck Driving Man [7]
It's Alright Ma [12]
One More Cup of Coffee [7]
I Want to Grow Up to be a Politician
Mr. Spaceman [R]
5D [R]
Chestnut Mare [7 or 12, can't recall]
Return of the Chestnut Mare [7- and 12-strings]
(I may have the order of this song wrong)
Mr. Tambourine Man [twice! Both Ric and 7-string]
Eight Miles High [7]

Encores:
The Trees Are All Gone [R]
Chimes of Freedom [R]
May the Road Rise to Meet You [7]

R=Rickenbacker 12-string | 7=7-string Martin | 12=12-string Martin | B=banjo

Genius! The guy might as well have asked him to sign a David Crosby CD while he was at it.

Before introducing Roger last evening, the announcer gave the standard admonition about turning off cell phones, no cameras or recording devices, etc. But after finishing his opening tune, Roger told the audience if anyone wanted to use their cell phone video to digitally record the show for YouTube, he was fine with it. lol!

Far out! No wonder there are so many video clips of him up on YouTube. I wondered how that kept happening.

I just wouldn't have expected that kind of an accepting attitude, is all. Maybe he figures it's going to happen anyway, so he may as well go with it.

Thanks for that info! This definately gives me an idea of what guitars he might play, and what songs we'll be seeing him play.

Steve,
McGuinn said the exact same thing at the Barns last year.

See my post:

If you just want the pertinent part, I wrote:

McGuinn seems to have a good attitude about this. He mentioned at the last Barns show that he played a concert once and that videos of the show appeared on YouTube by the time he got back to his hotel. And said if anyone videoed this show to please e-mail him a copy.
